I don't read the comic books so I don't know how fleshed out Thanos' backstory is with respect to the reason for getting rid of half of the population. In the movie, it seemed reminiscent of Kodos The Executioner's reasons in "The Conscience of the King" episode. They both had reasons that they felt would benefit their populations, but doing so in a drastic measure.
The other parallel that felt like Trek, and I hope that I'm wrong is that Infinity War seems to set up some type of reset button for 4. That's just a knee jerk reaction on my part- the writers may have some creative way to bring some of the people back. I feel a little cheated when they kill somebody (for dramatic reasons) only for it to be short lived. I'm guessing that one or more of the original Avengers may be sacrificed to bring others back, but I hope it's not just a reset that has no lingering consequences.
