Well, I think Infinity War is a shoo-in for at least the visual and sound effects awards and probably one or two of the design awards, but best director? Best screenplay? Nope, nope, nope, nope. I don't think even the score was all that remarkable.
Best adapted screenplay.

Avengers and Black Panther scored in tonight's Peoples Choice Awards. Infinity War getting "Movie of 2018" and "Action Movie of 2018" with Scarlett Johanson winning "Female Movie star".
Black Panther scored with Chadwick Bozeman winning "Male Movie Star of 2018" and Danai Gurira winning "Action Movie Star of 2018".

I would say Infinity War is deserving of some Oscars in the same sense that Return of the King deserved all it's Oscars war back when. Marvel/Disney are hoping the committees that decide such things are feeling as generous.
I think if you treat a film like Infinity War or Black Panther in the same way that, presumably, Return of the King was judged then you could justify it as a best film contender. Assuming all categories are weighed equally then the final product could be more than the sum of its parts. So it is possible that a Marvel movie could be a best picture contender but not really a contender for Best Director, Actors, etc.
