Avengers Cartoon

The announcement has just been made that it's debuting on Disney XD in the fall:

"The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" -- Further aligning the strength of Marvel's hugely popular characters and stories with the burgeoning Disney XD brand and global reach, an all-new animated series, "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," will debut in fall 2010 on Disney XD and DisneyXD.com. Beginning with the "Iron Man" and "Incredible Hulk" movies in 2008, the release of "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" follows Marvel's overall "Avengers Assemble" strategy introducing the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe through various content platforms, including the upcoming feature films "Iron Man 2" in May of 2010, "Thor" in May of 2011 and "Captain America" in July of 2011, all building up to the Avengers theatrical film in 2012. Produced by Marvel Animation, the animated series features 52 episodes targeted at kids 9-14, starring Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Giant Man and Wasp -- who form the Avengers, a team assembled when no single hero's powers can save the world. A 20-part "micro-series" that focuses on each hero's backstory will roll out in fall 2010 on Disney XD, immediately followed by the series premiere on Disney XD in the U.S. and, shortly thereafter, around the world. Disney XD, the single largest distributor of Marvel content around the world, currently showcases approximately 20 hours of Marvel series (including "The Spectacular Spider-Man," "Fantastic Four" and "Iron Man") each week.

Didn't get to see the trailer.

That 90's Avengers cartoon was bad. Let's take the X-Men series, and just change character names.

It's a wee bit odd to have that and Superhero Squad on the air.

Well one's for the little kids and one's for the older ones. I just hope the writing is geared for adults as well as teens.

You can still see the trailer at this site:

It kind of gives that Bruce Timm vibe, but we'll see if it lives up to that. Here's some comments from Phil Lamarr (who will be voicing Wonder Man and J.A.R.V.I.S.):

I would say that the tone on Avengers is mature but not dark. It's not a kiddy show. I mean, there is peril. There is a lot of action, but I don't think there is any effort or desire to make it gritty. These are heroes. I would say the thing that is most unique about it is, it's more character-driven than most superhero action series. The relationships between the characters (are the focus). You're seeing more of that than you have, I think, in other series. I think that makes it skew a little older...but there is as much action as anybody of any age could want.

Yeah, but it seem unusual for that to happen for a team of heroes. Not only featuring some the same characters, but this fall Iron Man will be on three seperate animated shows.

The characterizations on SHS and Avengers will no doubt be completely different. SHS is basically a parody. Avengers sounds like it will be more straight up action animated series. If Lamar is saying that its going to be a little more mature, then I think I can trust that.

Besides, so what about Iron Man being on three different shows with three different continuities. No different than the comics with Wolverine being on nearly every team anyway! Besides, each version is different. I'd agree with it being dumb if say it was the 90s and he was guest starring in Spider-Man and X-Men, while having his own show and then there being an Avengers show and all the continuities being linked. It would just smack too much of stunt casting. Even though Iron Man has shown up in one form or another in nearly every Marvel animated series anyway or was at least referenced.

If Avengers is basically the Marvel answer to the DCAU then they could finally truly compete with DC in their animated offerings.

I'd like to see Miss Marvel on the team, but from that trailer she isn't. She's in that Superherosquad, but it's like Super-deformed version of comic characters.

Well Ms. Marvel - popular as she is - is not a core Avengers team member. Your core really is Iron Man, Giant Man and Wasp, Captain America, Thor, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and the Vision. Maaaaybe Wonder Man but I wouldn't consider him a core. And you probably could even do away with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as they're kinda crossed between Avengers and X-Men. But really your main core is Cap, Iron Man, Thor and Giant/Ant Man. They've been with the team the longest out of all the others. Hawkeye would be nice to see as he's always been the biggest Avengers supporter throughout the years.

Presumably they'll roll out some roster changes as the series progresses, and we'll get a chance to get to know the animated versions of a few other characters.

How long do you think the Hulk will last?

Also they're aimed at different demographics, so will be tailored appropriately. SHS is for young children. This looks to be more for older children and teens.

As for the roster and storylines, I gather that they're hewing pretty closely to the plots of the original Avengers comics, starting at the beginning of the series. Hence it has the same roster the Avengers had in the '60s. Although it is modernized; for instance, Jarvis will be an AI as seen in the Iron Man movies, rather than a live butler.

Iron Man and War Machine did guest-star in the '90s Spider-Man, played by the same actors who played them in the contemporaneous IM cartoon (well, almost; James Avery played Rhodes on Spidey, but in IM he'd been replaced at that point by Dorian Harewood). It was a reunion of sorts, since Robert Hays (Iron Man) and Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spidey) had co-starred in the Starman TV series years earlier.

However, when the Fantastic Four showed up in Spidey's show, only one of them had the same voice he'd had on the syndicated '90s show, and there was no indication of a common continuity. But the '90s FF and IM shows, and the Hulk show that followed, were in continuity with each other.
