Avatar sinks Titanic...

Cameron's unstoppable Avatar hit $1.29 billion at the international box office, Fox said today, passing Cameron's Titanic mark of $1.24 billion to set the new record. By Monday, the studio estimates, Avatar will top Titanic's worldwide gross of $1.848 billion to become Earth's biggest money-maker of all-time.

And, no, the film is not stopping there.

Within a week to a week-and-a-half, Fox guestimated, the 3D- and IMAX-powered Avatar should swipe Titanic's last remaining major record: all-time domestic champ.

Avatar, which grossed $36 million domestically Friday-Sunday, and, oh, by the way, led the box office for a sixth straight weekend, is now at $552.8 million on that ledger. On Saturday, it blew past The Dark Knight for second place on the domestic list. Titanic's once-believed unbeatable $600.8 million will be the next to go.

Good. I liked Avatar a lot much more then Titanic. :p

I'd like to know how things compare when adjusted for inflation, and also how many bums on seats in theatres there were compared to others.

I haven't seen it, and the promos didn't inspire any particular interest in doing so. So how does something like this happen?

Wow. I honestly didn't think another movie would do that for a long time. I did like Titanic. I mean, aside from Kate Winslet's lovely assets, I loved the whole technical aspect of the movie. I got to see the grace and beauty of the Titanic in something more than faded black and white pictures. If the ship was anything like the one portrayed in the movie, no wonder it was such a magnificent achievement.

As for Avatar, I have yet to see it, but I will probably buy it on Blu-ray sight unseen. I just get the feeling I'll love it.

Wow. I didn't think it'd actually come to this. After over a decade as the box office king, James Cameron has actually dethroned himself. That is one formidable success right there.

Simple: There were people who disagreed with you here, who wanted to see it, and may have wanted to see it twice.

Like me. :)

And those of you who haven't seen it, if you are getting the feeling you want to now (like Axiom) definitely see it in the theatres while you still can.

I have reservations about the film, but, yeah, see it in the theatre. I'm not sure it will be even half the film on Blu-Ray or DVD.

You guys know if James Cameron ever makes a movie that grosses under a billion dollars we'll see "BOMB, TOTAL BOMB, no one went to see it." all over the internet.

Even apart from the changes in ticket price the 3D bump gives the film a bit of an edge; but still, a huge achievement.

I prefer Titanic to Avatar, but whatever.

This is hardly a surprise when you factor in 12 years worth of ticket inflation and add the higher ticket price Avatar's 3-D showings have, and the even higher price for an IMAX showing. Hell, I'm surprised Titanic has been number one for this long. I would have thought through inflation alone another movie would have dethroned it before now.

I've been thinking the same thing. No matter what he does next, whatever it is, it will be considered a failure.

I was just going to say this very same thing. You can't compare movies like that unless you're taking into account the prices for movie tickets at the time. I have a very clear memory of standing in line, in the rain and paying $2.50 for an evening showing of Return of the Jedi. Imagine what that movie would have made if I'd paid... what is it now for a night show... $50. 00? ;)

For inflation Avatar is at 25 and Titanic is at 6.

So don't buy into the movie media BS.

Dammit someone beet me to it.

Well, one thing going for Avatar is that its tickets cost almost twice as much as Titanic's did 10 13 years ago. Titanic's release in 1997 ticket prices were hovering around, IIRC, $9. Avatar's ticket prices are around $15 for the 3D version.

Adjusted for inflation, wordwide grosses are very, very different.

Yeah, but "The Dark Knight" ticket prices have gone up. And "Transformer" ticket prices have gone up. Are you saying for 15 YEARS, even with the rise of ticket prices it STILL took Cameron's Avatar to best Titanic?

That's still special. Even with inflation and other movies in Imax as well, every other movie ever created since Titanic has not been able to come close to passing it. With inflation. Not even close. And then here comes Avatar.

Still impressive.
