Avatar Is The Work Of The Devil, Says Mark Driscoll

First the Communists had their say about Avatar, now the Christians are having theirs::wtf::rolleyes:

That depends on if you consider the evangelical Calvinist side to be actually Christian. They have a tendency to remember Jesus's name, but not much else of the New Testament. Too Warm, fuzzy, and inclusive for them.

What always gets lost in this discussion is that there's nothing spiritual about the Na'vi connection to their world, it is presented as a verifiable physical effect of a planet-wide neural network.
Not only is that point not lost, it's integral to the statement I made that you quoted. The way the Pandora ecology works is new age beliefs made literal; the Na'vi believe in a force that can be independently verified by science and produces concrete results.

Hence, as said, the union of scientific realism and new age spirituality. This isn't any less religious than, say, any given religious film where God directly intervenes in the life of man.

I know the first time I saw Avatar I was extremely disturbed by just what he was talking about, but I let myself give into the pressure from those around me that it was a good movie and not spiritually corrupt. I really do thank you for posting this video; it was very convicting.

Have you watched Mark Driscoll? Mark Driscoll is absolutely a Christian. I disagree with his reformed theology somewhat, and I do think he has a tendency to read too much into the scriptures at times. That said I watch him frequently (which is why I can say that your statement is nonsense) and I do think he is anointed by God for preaching. Mars Hill's only out of Washington campus is actually just a few blocks away from me, so I was there last Sunday and I'm planning to go there when I have the opportunity in the future.

Cool.. BTW, I looked up the Christianity Today article he mentioned. It also brings up some of the New Agey inspiration behind the movie, but basically says, "it's fiction, so maybe just like, you know, watch it? ...but without looking for spiritual guidance from it." I like how they acknowledge that there is however an underlying message that everyone, Christians included, should hear, about caring for the environment, the future, etc.

Also, I've read Christians slamming Star Wars on pretty much the same grounds. Just stop to think how ridiculous that is. "OK so this movie basically says that there is a Force which allows us access to the afterlife, but we know that Jesus is the only way we get to heaven, so that movie is a lie!" No duh. (others just call it fiction)

This guy's in Seattle? I am deeply shamed . . . .

(I admit I've never heard of him before.)

No, that guy is having his say, not Christians.

Then more Christians should get up off of their asses and say so. Drown these extremist false prophets out.

Except that they're the ones who are mostly in control of Christianity, and the ones whose voices are heard all of the time over most of the moderates. As I said above, get up off of your asses and drown them out, the same way that you demand that Muslims should do so.

Of course extremists are the most vocal, they're the ones who think countries should be run according to their morals, and cry murder otherwise. Us moderate Christians silently counter them by using our brains at the voting booth. For me, moderate isn't just a place on the scale of the political spectrum. It's also your level of passion on any given subject. That's just my personality though, I'm not easily swept up, riled up or upset. Maybe that puts me on Jesus' "lukewarm, in que for being spat out" list, I dunno. I prefer to think it makes me sane.

Evangelical Calvinists are mostly in control of Christianity? LOL!! That's really, really amusing.

Their should be no "moderates." We are following the living God the creator of every thing in the universe. There is nothing remotely comparable to Him. Every Christian should be on fire with His love, following His will, and be truly radical for the cause of Christ.

Wow, this is getting pretty close to being TNZ-worthy. Go preach someplace else, Michael.

I mean really, who in their right mind could be "extremely disturbed" by watching Avatar?

I, for one, was extremely disturbed that a movie with that thin of a plot could make so much money. ;)

Really, some folks just need to separate fact from fiction. It ain't hard for most of us.

Avatar has a video game. Where's Jack Thompson's tirade at?

Don't insult Christians by lumping them in with this guy. He's an extremist.

You're joking, yes? All "christians" are extremists by nature.

Well, sad to see that bigotry is alive and well among science fiction fandom.

I'm pretty sure he had a signature a while back touting his bigotry, but I can't remember what it said exactly.

Given the impossible core beliefs of Christians coupled with a total lack of proof to justify them, you're all extremists.

And given that "proof" isn't the point, and given that such blanket characterization of a whole body of belief and all those inside it as "extreme" w/o any corresponding "proof" of such extremeness, except one of your own definition...that makes you a bigot, sir.
