Well, it seems that even Colonel Quaritch was underestimating his enemy.
That's nothing odd considering that he had just destroyed the home tree without facing any relevant resistance from the natives.
And that Pandora's wildlife would suddenly start to attack the human forces isn't something you could have forseen either (especially if you don't believe one bit of the crap Grace and the other scientists were talking about). So from the colonel's point of view there was just no need for any kind of orbital bombardment.
He was arrogant and ignorant, but not stupid.
Or do you mean that RDA should have tried orbital bombardment after Quaritch's death?
(And wasn't it stated in the movie that they used all their explosives in Quaritch's first attack anyway?)
If the movie was only made for the visuals, why did they even include a story? Why not make Avatar two hours of Jake wandering around looking at cool shit?If you want a discussion thread where they appreciate the visuals (y'know, the real reason the movie was made!), rather than whining about the story, there's always the CGSociety!
^Reading all these issues regarding crypto-chordates and what not makes me feel bad about my complaints. I hate movies where the good guy's success hinges on the incredible stupidity of the villians.
Here's the thing they've got transatmospheric shuttles load'em up with the explosives take off at night and climb to a cruising altitude of about ninety thousand feet or so. Set course for the Well of Souls. When they reach the right point lower the ramps nudge the sticks back let gravity take over. Everybody gathers in the mess hall to clink their glasses in celebration of the successful conclusion to Operation Gargemal's Wrath.
Okay. Avatar might not have had the most original story line. In fact, I do know of the similarities of this film and Pocahontas (among others). However, regardless of that: Avatar executed that story well. It took you on amazing visual feast and made you mind explore a world you didn't see before.
Granted, I am not racing out to the store to buy it on DVD, but I did see it in the theater twice and enjoyed it very much both times.
Side Note:
Oh, hey, speaking of Pocahontas: Here is a photo that some of you might enjoy...

I mean, what exactly is the Raccoon looking at, anyhow?
