Avatar 3D worth the extra money?

3D is everywhere, or at any rate in many non-IMAX theatres. I saw it twice in 3D at two non-IMAX showings.

OK dumb question is the 3D option only availble in IMAX or everywere?

Well, it's not available everywhere, but a lot of regular theatres are equipped for 3D. As such, you can probably find a 3D non-IMAX location.

Edit:

I recommend going to a website such as www.fandango.com . It makes a distinction between "Avatar," "Avatar in Digital 3D," and "Avatar: an IMAX Experience" when you do a search for showtimes.

I saw it in 3D. The glasses fit reasonably well in front of my own glasses.

I think it's worthwhile. I've seen other movies in 3D, and none of them remotely compare to how Avatar does it. There were a few spots where the depth of field wasn't conceived very well and became distracting, but for 95% of the movie it does an amazing job giving depth to the images.

If you have poor eyesight or can only see well out of one eye, however, you will probably get very little out of the experience, so keep that in mind.

On the other hand, if you're colorblind, it will not impact the experience--this 3D technology uses light polarization rather than color filtering.

If you DO go to see it in 3D, make sure it's in RealD and not Dolby. I first saw it in Dolby 3D, and the glasses made it really bad, and I did get a bit of a headache. Over Christmas break, however, I got to see it in RealD 3D, and it was SOOOOO much better!

Maybe that's where the distinction, and the eye strain is?

I've been asking people, and no one has had a problem. However, every theater around here is RealD 3D. Maybe the Dolby 3D sucks?

I would say paying the extra few bucks for the "Real-D-3D" experience is well worth it. This isn't old-school 3-D cheese. This was simply astonishing. At my theater they even had the trailer for Alice in Wonderland done using the same technology, and that was pretty awesome as well.
