Hi All,

So my wife and I were watching Frasier on Netflix this afternoon, and in the episode, Frasier and Niles decided to take a course on basic automotive maintenance and repair.

And my wife says to me, "we should do that."

Anyway - our experience with automotive maintenance is only slightly more advanced than Frasier's and Niles' -- which is to say we can pump our own gas and can check the oil level.

Are there any automotive books or online classes that you can recommend for people of our limited... exposure?

The Chilton’s Books are pretty good for the beginner, or maybe Haynes. Just try to start with basic stuff at first, you know, don't try to rebuild an engine on your first task.

Or do it like I have, just start with basic stuff and do more as you go. It's not a step learning curve, much of the reluctance for people to learn is simple fear of screwing up something. A few years ago I could do brakes, some repairs, change out parts. Now since I've been able to work on engines, install turbos, replace drive trains, etc. I find it relaxing to work on cars, 2 weeks ago my brother in law finished building a Polaris RZR buying parts online and rebuilding the motor and transmission from severely wrecked RZR. And in the same shop, replaced car engines, transmissions, etc.

I used to see maintenance manuals for a variety of cars like Ford Escort or Honda Civics at places like Pepboys. But I haven't seen those in a long while
