Here in Tasmania workers are not going to get a long weekend for ANZAC Day because Tasmania, unlike other states, has no laws in place to compensate for the times April 25 falls on a weekend.
In my opinion - we don't have a holiday on Anzac Day so that we can watch the football or the cricket, or to take the family away for a long weekend. The sole reason for Anzac Day is to honour the sacrifices made by our servicemen in times of war.
To give Monday off when Anzac Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday cheapens the meaning of Anzac Day, in my opinion
My local newspaper has run a poll on this topic. They asked
Should there be an Anzac Day public holiday if Anzac Day falls on a weekend?
The results
No, its a day of remembrance for our Diggers ---- 43%
It doesn't bother me either way -------- 14%
Yes, we should have a holiday for Anzac Day ------ 43%
So I wonder what other people think about this topic, not just Australian and New Zealanders but people from any country who have a specific day to honour those that have fought in wars.
