Sara Douglass was properly most famous for her Axis Trilogy and the Wayfayer Redemption Trilogy. She was quiet big in the late 90s and the early 00s (when I discovered her books), though in recent years (other then sadly battling cancer) she mainly was concentrating on her house and garden. Her Garden blog was always enjoyable.
As somebody that was never ever a traditional fantasy reader (I tended to be more hard-core Sci-Fi), Sara's books, especially her sense of humour that shone through and made me enjoy the genre.
It really is a sad to lose such a talented author. Especially one that was known to be quiet interactive and collabrative with her fan base.
Australia definately has lost one of its best and most successful writers in the SF&F genre.
