Australia plans to reboot "The Phantom"

I don't know if it's still the case, but at one point The Phantom comics were being written and illustrated by a couple of Australians.

I've always been under the impression that comic books/superheroes are a uniquely American phenomenon, but the one comic I do vaguely recall encountering as a kid is The Phantom. I wonder if there's a connection there.

I suppose they could think outside the box and base a film on the Phantom 2040 cartoon from the 90's.

Personally, I'm tired of the the standard little pussy scene where they make fun of the costume or otherwise mock their source material. Postmodernism is way past its shelf life. If they're that afraid of genre subject matter, they should go make movies for Lifetime channel or something. :rommie:

^Yet what they put him in is even more ridiculous than the classic purple suit.

Not in the least. It's just a different silly more in keeping with current pop aesthetics. Which may be ironic itself, of course.

Is it possible to come up with a definition of "classic" for popular culture that translates as something more sophisticated than "we're used to it," or a definition of "iconic" other than "it's popular enough for people to recognize it?"

You'd like to think, but post-postmodernism is not going to respect that shit either. The moving finger writes...

You know, The Phantom's background provides a unique opportunity to tell a multigenerational story over a period of centuries. You have the potential to introduce up to 21 (22 if you count an update of young Chris or Heloise) different actors/actresses to play The Phantom.

Wouldn't it be great to have the current Phantom have to solve a dilemma that may have stemmed from issues unresolved from two previous Phantoms in the near and distant past? Have Kit go to the Diaries with Guran to read about them, while we the audience see them in action.

As for the outfit for a contemporary big screen Phantom, I'm kinda sorta partial to this (a bit "old school Nick Fury meets Nolan Bats-ish"):

Okay, you just gave me the perfect cue to plug THE PHANTOM: GENERATIONS, a new comic book miniseries that is covering the entire history of the Phantoms, one issue at the time. By amazing coincidence, my issue (featuring the 12th Phantom, back during the French Revolution) comes out in a few weeks!

Woot!

When's it out in Australia, Greg?

I know it goes on sale on March 31st here in the States. Not sure about Australia.

The series is published by Moonstone. Perhaps your local comics dealer knows.

I should point out that the series has been running for about a year now, with different writers and artist each issue. My issue is #12.

Thanks. :techman:

I haven't walked into a comic store in over 10 years, but I still pick up an occassional "Phantom" at the news agency- not as rabid as I once was.

It seems my comic store self exile may have run its course. I'll be looking out for the series and your edition in particular.

Thanks again, mate.

No problem. Thanks for your interest. I admit I got a thrill out of writing an actual Phantom story. And I can't wait to show it to my dad, who introduced me to the character.

The most amazing thing about the Phantom is that he is so obscure in the US.

Here in Sweden, there have been a Phantom comic book since the 50:s, and it is still one of the few comics still going strong with about 26 issues/year.

The Phantom is even "adopted" by scandinavia, in a way, due to the fact that most stories are written here nowadays.
