Aussie Rock!

I had a conversion experience to aussie rock which I never got over. A mixed cassette tape.. An angels song was a part of that (the secrets one). I don't even listen to rock as a genre, it is waaaaay down there on my preference list. But converts, we never really get over that. Long story lol.

You should try growing up with these songs, when they become the soundtrack of your life, then they are always there.

I haven't got a consistent life soundtrack. I hated the music of my youth. Then I found new stuff that I didn't hate

Really the most long term music of my life is the TOS sound track

Australian music is so awesome. I heard tonight about Jim's death. Very sad.

I could post some videos, but I'm sore and sleepy from a busy weekend.

Well, moving on...

A couple of extremes tonight, one form the past, one from the, uh, not so past. And a good illustration of the variety of Aussie music.

Hans Poulsen is an Australian singer-songwriter and instrumentalist who was popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. When I was a kid, this was one of his songs that was on the radio all the time, and stuck in my head for many years.. In its way it has that cute sixties optimism, which is no bad thing. :)

TISM (This Is Serious Mum) was a seven piece anonymous alternative rock band from Melbourne. The group was formed in 1982 and enjoyed a large underground/independent following. Their third album Machiavelli and the Four Seasons reached the Australian national top 10 in 1995. TISM was known for its hybrid of dance music and rock, high-energy live shows and humorous lyrics. TISM's songs frequently satirised modern culture, celebrities and the entertainment industry, classic literature and art, current affairs, politics and sport. The titles of their songs were often wordplays created by juxtaposing pop culture references with more intellectual ones. Personally I found them a little odd, but this was one song I, and I'm sure many others, could relate to.

Bonus: I mentioned this one back in the first post as a personal favourite. Sherbet was never really a "guy's band", they were screamed at by teen girls. But they were pretty damn good musos, and every now and then they pulled out a song like this, with great keyboards and a catchy riff.

I'll include a few more forom the initial post as we go along.

Nothing? OK...

Some Kiwi acts for a change

Dragon was huge, and this was their biggest

I found Split Enz a much more interesting band in their early days, like this one:

And Shona Laing was, over here, a one hit wonder, but it was a good one:

I love the entire True Colours album with all my heart. It was on permaplay for years

I wasn't a big fan of later Enz, too pop, after all the 'art rock' stuff up to Dizrhythmia (which is a great album). The early band was driven by Tim FInn and this guy, and this is a GREAT pop song:

This song utterly cracks me up, it reminds me of some posts here..

If war broke out I'd be the last one to know
If there was fire they'd just leave me to burn..

Australian music - where do I start? For me it would have been some time in the late 80s.

Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning
INXS - New Sensation

But it was the 90s when my interest in music started to hit it's peak, as during this time I became an adult.

1990 - The Angels - The Dogs are Talking - this song got me interested in heavier music, as I was 16 at the time, and didn't have much choice in Nowra the previous year when it came to radio.
1991 - Ratcat - Don't go Now
1992 - Baby Animals - Rush You
1993 - You Am I - Berlin Chair - this was the first song, which made me love this great Australian band. One of the best in the last 25 years.
1994 - The Meanies - 10% Weird
1995 - silverchair - Israel's Son

I'll post more later. It was hard to remember some years. But the late 90s were a personal favourite of mine.

Neil Finn is a Lennon and McCartney class songwriter. Hugely underrated.

I'm extremely familiar with DC (does anyone else think Jet are a bit like a watered down version ?), have seen them, Finn and The Crowdies, Airborne (nutters !) and saw the great Rose Tattoo a few years back.

Always thought INXS were a bit lame.

If by DC you mean AC/DC then yes I would agree, Jet are consciously aping AC/DC.

I agree about INXS as well, I just can't get into them. It's like they wanted to be an edgy alt rock band but just didn't really know how, so they just made kind of insipid pop guitar music instead.

I am not alone !

And yes, DC was just shorthand as AC/DC is too much effort...

Run out of stuff? Dear girl, I've barely started!

You're a Savage Garden fan? Me not really, they were goodf at what they did, but this song brings a wry smile to my face:

There was mention earlier of an anthology of Aust music called 'Golden Miles'. This would be the title track:

And this is a fine example if 70s Aussie music:

I can't believe I haven't posted this band yet!:

(Yes folks, the lead singer was a Federal Govt member)

Cheer up! I'll give it some thought, see what else I can come up with.
