Because there hasn't been many attempts to give this rather enigmatic ship a face, I figured the contest would be a good reason to attempt to do so myself.
The idea behind this concept started with a description for a kitbash someone had proposed somewhere on the net, which I found while looking for a direction to go in for the Liberator. The description was that of a saucer section like a Cheyenne class, an engineering section like that of a Constitution class, and the nacelles of a Galaxy class. While looking through Shipschematics that same night, I ran into the Pyotr Velikiy, and it hit me that the description of the kitbash idea and the Pyotr Velikiy have a somewhat similar hull arrangement. It was actually quite perfect, because I always imagined the Liberator as a heavy cruiser, but I didn't think it proper to follow the typical hull layout, since that has already been done with DJ Curtis's Edmonton, and someone's Rigel class, whose name I cannot recall at the moment.
So I went to work, with the idea that the Liberator was a class that was a descendent of the Pyotr Velikiy. I put a lot of work into making sure the two shared many of the same lines, while making it clear that the Liberator was one of the Galaxy's kin.
I had a number of different ideas, such as using a secondary hull based either on the Galaxy class or Nebula class, and using nacelles and pylons based off either the Nebula class or Cheyenne class.
Any advice, comments, opinions, or help is not only welcomed, but required. Should I go in this direction and start making the final design in Illustrator, or do any of you have your own ideas of what the Liberator should look like? And if any of you know anyone one the forum that is good at giving advice for this sort of thing, please tell them that I would like their attention. I don't have very long, so we will need to decide on the final details of this design very soon.
I also think it would be appropriate to pass the word to Masao, since I think he might like to see a modern version of one of his designs.
