Aubrey-Maturin novels....

Distorted Humor

Anyone else read(ing) these novels, I just started these novels, (which are about as far as my usual reading as you can go) and I am enjoying these novels greatly. Very unique and highly enjoyable....

I LOVE those novels. Absolutely amazing!! I had the honor of meeting Patrick O'Brian and he signed my book. Very interesting person!

I've read all of them, and was so anxious to read the last three that I bought them as soon as they came out, in hardcover.

I first started reading them when I was on a sailing-warfare kick about twenty years ago--first Dudley Pope, then Alexander Kent, then Patrick O'Brian. Today, O'Brian's books are the only ones that are still in my library.

The interesting thing is that, while over time my enthusiasm for broadsides, boarding parties, and cries of "Enemy in sight!" faded, I kept reading O'Brian for his non-naval elements--especially his characters, but also dialogue, settings, and overall style.

A truly great novel sequence, IMHO.

I read up to the second one after really liking the movie. I would have continued reading if it weren't for the fact that my local store didn't carry all of them and made you order them. Aubrey and Maturin's friendship in particular mirrors the friendship of Kirk and Bones. Made me wonder if perhaps Roddenberry was a fan of O'Brian.

More likely the other way around. TOS came first by about 2 years. Master and Commander, the first novel, wasn't published until '69.
