Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website now

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

I'm old and no fun and I think this kid should know better and bears watching. He'll end up with a rap sheet beginning with a "prank" like lighting fires to animals and such. Who knows where it could end up? The sky's the limit kid.

Um, right  I am shocked and amazed you haven't called for him to be incarcerated a-la A Clockwork Orange and heavily medicated.

Me and thee disagree? Oh Noes!

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

^ I gotta say, it's a bit of a stretch to go to torturing animals from this. We don't really know the kid's motivations, but I expect moral outrage was the intended result rather than to offend racially. Of course, it was stupid and DID offend racially and there's no excuse for that.

But either way, it's a far cry from the sort of demented sociopathy that leads people to torture animals.

Nowhere did I say he was torturing animals. The point is that behaviors follow patterns. E.g., many people who kill other people start by hurting and killing animals. People who end up hating people for their color or religion or orientation may start by simply disliking or disrespecting them.

I am NOT a black person. I AM a person of color however, and I would be pretty upset to hear that over any store's loudspeaker. Call me sensitive if you will, but I don't find the incident funny or innocent at all. Everytime I get called racially related names it is not funny or innocent.

^ I realize that, but stores shouldn't just let any moron get ahold of the PA system. There should at least be a code that they have to enter on the phone keypad.

You implied it would be a natural progression. I'm not sure how else to read "He'll end up with a rap sheet beginning with a "prank" like lighting fires to animals and such. Who knows where it could end up?" other than an implication of such.

It is not neccessarily a natural progression from something like this though, is what I am saying.

I did not say the incident was either funny OR innocent.

I did say however that we don't know the kids motivations, which we don't. Some kids say stupid racist things without thinking about it or meaning it to be hurtful, or thinking it will be funny when they are young, some are genuinely malicious hateful little shits. You're making assumptions, I am not.

According to Starbreaker, there is a code. You know what else all Walmarts have in common? A boatload of current and former teen employees who enjoy pulling pranks on the PA system and telling their friends about it.

If someone wants to do this, it's going to happen. They can't turn every phone into Ft. Knox. over potential pranksters.

I am not making assumptions. I am pointing out that the incident may not be as innocent a prank as so many posters seem to think.

I will admit I have never been a teenaged boy making a "prank" of this nature.

I will say that all the times I have been called racially-related names the people making the remarks were being far less than innocent and benign.

I am also pointing out that many people who find themselves in big trouble have followed a pattern of small troubles leading to larger ones. I am not a psychologist or a police officer but I believe a lot of law enforcement data will back that up.

My thoughts on the matter; no less or more valid than yours; offer another Point Of View. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations and all that.

Well, ALL kids get into trouble at some point, there's no reason to think this is the start or a part of a pattern of behaviour, not from the available information.

When I was a teenage boy (some 20 years ago) I knew a black woman I volunteered with at an old folks home who had a pigmentation problem that made parts of her face white. Being a stupid ignorant kid I asked her about it one day, and when she explained I said "oh, I just thought you were half-cast".

Naturally the woman was absolutely aghast and burst into tears on the spot, I too was mortified when I realised how badly I had hurt her feelings. I still feel terrible now and think about that moment a lot, in fact I feel like a piece of shit just relating the story to you. But I never was, and am not now, a racist. I was just a stupid kid with an under developed sense of humour who said a stupid thing out of ignorance of the power of words.

I don't think what I did was necessarily much better or worse, or much different to what this kid did. We just don't know what was in his head, and this small snippet of a news story is not enough to draw any conclusions from.

I'm just saying, keep an open mind, this could be a turning point for the kid as much as it could be the start of something bad.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

I think it is actually pretty brave of you to relate your story. I will try to incline my mind kindly toward the young man in the Walmart incident but due to my advanced age will have admitted difficulty not thinking about how some people who find themselves in big trouble start with much smaller troubles.

You yourself don't seem to headed for Hell in a handcart. ;)

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Thanks, I think I turned out OK. :D
