Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website now

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in the case of a racial comment that was made over the public-address system at a Walmart store in southern New Jersey.

The incident happened last weekend when a male voice came over the Walmart public address system and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now." The announcement provoked an immediate apology from the store manager.

This is really shocking. I can't believe anyone would do that. I mean kids do pranks but this?

Oh and sorry if the thread title offended anyone.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

I'm black but I think it's just a dumb kid. The media playing it up (but we can't stop them) just makes it worse.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

That's ridiculous. Give him a fine and make sure his parents punish him or something, but actually arresting a kid over something like is totally excessive imo.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

There are people who blame Walmart for the kid actions.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Even though I'm black. I don't see a problem with this. The guy just wanted to have some laugh and said something controversial yet said it in a nice way. If he used the N word or any other racial slurs then it would be a problem.

I don't even think he's a racist. Just wanted to create a reaction from the customers.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Over and above the racist comment-- which, if nothing else, is a warning flag-- the kid was trespassing and misusing private property, so it's appropriate that he was arrested. I'm sure they didn't send him to Sing Sing or anything. They took him to the Station and called his parents to take him home, and he'll hopefully have to appear before a Judge at some point. The kid should know that he did something wrong and said something insulting.

Ummmm....you know i love your dawggies and all, but......no you aren't (black that is).

RJ, i agree with you. Kids need to face the consequences of their actions. If a law was broken then the appropriate punishment applies. I think if more kids were given the appropriate punishments then we'd see a lot fewer problems than we do. [/old fart]

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

All the headlines about this annoy me. Yes, it's news for a day. But all the "Shock From Racial Comment in Wal-Mart" stuff is getting ridiculous. Seriously, shock? Maybe temporarily when you hear it. Then you remember that there are racists out there and you learn that it wasn't some sort of official Wal-Mart announcement and you move on as the authorities deal with it.

Understandable. How'd the kid manage to get control of the PA system? They should have tighter security.

I would hope that nobody in the store actually thought it was a Wal-Mart announcement (depends on how 'adult' the kid's voice sounded). They might lose business over this.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

What if he'd said White? It would still be racist. Or might have sounding like a warning (get out now something's about to happen you don't want to be here for)

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Ridiculous palaver over nothing. Kids play pranks all the time.

Fine him, get him to do some community service to annoy him enough not to repeat it again, and let the parents give him a sharp clip around the ears. End of. To see it reported as major news on some of the online outlets is nuts.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Or actually make the kid WORK at Wal-Mart. That's punishment enough, I would think.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Some kid was making an ass of himself out in public. Seems that Walmart has learned their lesson and is going to be changing their PA system so this doesn't happen again.

End of story, I think.

Agreed. And for the few people who got seriously bent out-of-shape, get the fuck over yourselves. There are idiot kids (and even idiot adults) who say/do stupid things. The logical thing in this case was to report it to the manager of the store and move on. It wasn't WalMart's fault. Heck, I remember times when someone in the store would get on the intercom (it was laughably easy) and say something that they shouldn't say. Or call up the store and see if they could get someone to page "Mike Hunt" or daft stuff like that.

In the old days, the kid would have got whacked upside the head by his parents when they found out and that would have been the end of it. Or for the non-violence folks, his parents would have had him do some work to keep him occupied and out of trouble.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

I laughed when I read the article a few days ago.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

Where I live, most people would be mildly amused if they heard something like this over a shopping centre loud speaker. It may cause a few glances and frowns between shoppers, but everyone would understand it was some kid (or someone) making a prank.

The greater problem is those who take stuff too seriously, and blow minor incidents out of proportion.

Also I think, if kids didn't play up from time to time, then what a dull place the world would be.

Re: Attention, TrekBBS posters: All black people, leave the website no

All of the phones in the store can activate the PA system. It's #96. Go for it.

in a lot of cases that is true.
but this was new jersey which often ranks in the top five in hate crimes in the united states.

it maybe just a stupid prank or a stupid bigot getting started in causing trouble.
