Attending the Olympics?

So with the XXX Olympics' Opening Ceremony due to start in a few hours. I remember when the Sydney games were happening - living in the city at that time. Everyone was in a great mood proud to be from Sydney and most enjoyed showing their city to the world. I was able to attend some cycling. Australia didn't win any medals that night at the Velodrome, but it was a great night - unlike any other sporting event I've attended.

It's on my list of things to do, but sadly I haven't been to one yet.

My closest opportunity would have been Lake Placid, but I was a month old at the time.

Where were you during the Atlanta games, or are you mostly a Winter Olympics guy?

I would love to go to the olympics. In the last 20 years we've just had Winter Olympics somewhat close to me (Bay Area, CA) with Vancouver and Salt Lake. It would be nice to maybe go to the Summer games, even though I would think the Olympic Hockey would be an amazing experience.

Yes, going to the football in Coventry on Sunday.

Which is ironic as I'm not in favour of us p!ssing all that money away on something as unimportant.

However, it's here, the money's spent so may as well try to enjoy it. Must've fallen for that 'once in a lifetime opportunity' BS...

I have no intention of dealing with the cost, traffic and associated chaos of actually going to an Olympic event, but I'm certainly going to enjoy watching lots of it on TV!

I had the privledge of attending Track and Field at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1984. It was a wonderful experience. I had never felt such universal "good vibes" in a crowd that big before. No one seemed in too much of a hurry, not even so much as a loud conversation. In fact, it was kind of like that all over the city for the two weeks. I was so sorry to see the Games end that year.

Saw Carl Lewis win the gold in the 200, and some other events -- Daly Thompson in the decathalon(?). But the really cool thing was being right there during the medal ceremonies. On T.V. it seems like they stop everything for a ceremony but that say, they seemed to occur kind of "out of nowhere". Such genuine heartfelt emotion.

If anyone ever has the opportunity, I recommend atending any event you can whether you are a fan of that particular sport or not.

I would love to see a medal round of any event.

I mean, how cool would it be to have some folks over to your place and have an Olympic medal just casually hanging around something.

I stepped outside as some of the cyclist rode by in the 1984 road races. My little brother worked for the Olympics while I was off to Fort Knox a couple of days after the race.
