The final season of Stargate Atlantis has been honored with five Gemini Award nominations, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced this week. The Geminis honor English-language television produced in Canada.

Series co-creator Brad Wright picked up a nomination in the Best Writing In A Dramatic Series category, for the moving episode “The Shrine.”

Costume designer Valerie Halverson was nominated for her work in “The Queen,” and Todd Masters has been recognized once again for his outstanding make-up work — this time for the episode “Vegas” — along with his team, Leah Ehman, Holland Miller, Brad Proctor and Kyla Rose Tremblay.
Finally, Mark Savela (interview) and the visual effects team have been nominated twice in the Best Visual Effects category, for the episode “First Contact” and the series finale “Enemy At the Gate.” The “First Contact” team includes Savela, Jason Gross, Paul Hegg, Brandon Hines, Jamie Yukio Kawano, Alex McClymont, Krista McLean, James Rorick and Luke Vallee; the “Enemy At the Gate” team includes Savela, Brenda Campbell, Natalia Diaz, Carina Dielissen Hunt, Shannon Gurney, Paul Hegg, Vivian Jim, Chandra Juhasz, Kodie MacKenzie and Alex McClymont.

I'm glad their work is being recognized.

Cripes. Is TV in Canada that desperate for something to nominate? :rommie:

I guess BSG doesn't count as Canadian by whatever standards they use. They should just toss out the rule book and nominate all American shows made in Canada. BSG and Stargate are equally American anyway and at least that way they can lay claim to something worth nominating.

Geezus, this means SG:A gets nominations and BSG doesn't. I need to go hit something. :p

How is Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica equally American? Atlantis was made by a Canadian company they're just owned by MGM, whereas Universal owns and ran Galactica.v Atlantis had one Ameican writer, I don't think Galactica even had one Canadian writer on the show, let along producers and directors.

Are these "awards" for space shows? How many space shows are there?

No, these are the Canadian version of the Emmys

I never thought I would see something more pathetic than the Emmy's but here it is!

So if a show hires a Canadian then it's a Canadian show? Maybe House, or CSI, or NCIS should hire some Canadians.

The writers... of either show would be fine by me.

Not 100% certain, but I think the primary showrunners must be Canadian, with the production involving an actual Canadian owned production company. Brad Wright is Canadian, and his company produces the show for MGM.

Aw, c'mon now. "The Shrine" was a really great episode, as was "Vegas" (which felt kinda out of place as the second to last ep, but had the show continued, wouldn't have felt that way at all).

Yes, definitely. I was disappointed when I didn't see any acting noms in there.

On the flip side, Flashpoint got NINETEEN nominations and I'm sure The Listener must have picked up some as well.

That's Canadian TV for ya.

Those who are rolling their eyes at the Geminis just because they nominated Atlantis 5 times need to actually look at what it's nominated for. When I hear complaints about Atlantis, it's usually about the acting or writing. None of the nominations were for acting, and only one was for writing (and that episode was one of the good ones). The other four were for costume design, makeup, and visual effects (twice). Nominations in a category aren't for the series as a whole, but rather one specific episode. So don't say it shouldn't have been nominated just because you don't like the show in general. Judge Gemini's decisions based on the specific nominations for the specific episodes.

^ Yes, I don't remember the episode, but I have a hard time picturing anything the Stargate people writing being one of the 5 best Canadian shows.

I also don't consider it a Canadian show.

Technically isn't "Atlantis" not even a Canadian show? I thought it was made by a American studio? I've never been sure how that worst, with the exception I know that I think there is a rule were you have to use candian actors for most of the cast's or a certain amount of them in each episode. Kind of like how in the Canadian football league, each team use to could only have a certain amount of American players.

MGM didn't make Atlantis they merely funded it, Acme Shark produced it and it was created by Canadians and written mainly by Canadians.

Umm no... they merely OWE IT!

Stargate is owned by Americans.

Maybe Hugh Laurie can get a British award for House because he is British.

The more you try to explain it the stupider it sounds. No one thinks of the Stargates as Canadian shows besides these dumb award people because Canada doesn't make enough of it's own show. The only reason it's even filmed in Canada was because 15 years ago it was a lot cheaper to film shows in Canada then in the USA.

Universe was filmed in the USA a lot, does that mean it can't get nominated next year?

Read the rules then.
