Asteroid could hit Mars

Well, maybe if it does indeed hit Mars and we can get good pics of the aftermath, the general public might believe the scientists currently mocked as Chicken Littles that such an impact could happen on Earth, as it has in the past, and get people actually doing something about a planetary defense against this potential cataclysm! Or people would see the pics, say, "way kewl," and keep on updating their MySpace pages with pics of their pets. :brickwall: -- RR

It would certainly be interesting if the Asteroid got caught in Mars gravity very close to the planet but instead of hitting Mars got swung by the gravitational pull of Mars and got redirected towards Earth. We'd be in some serious shit.
Man, we just can't catch a break. :brickwall:

Wants wrong with you, did the hairdressers perm your hair wrong or something.

Let's dial it back a notch or five, please Fire. I get what you were going for here, but can we please not skirt the trolling line while saying it? Thank you.

Ok i'll rephrase it, Dear mr OhZedMasTree, what problem do you have with my post about the asteroid hitting Earth?

Merry Christmas.

Thanks for making the decision easier.

Its not trolling, you had a go at me for the way I said it so I rectified my mistake and rephrased it, if correcting a mistake pointed out by a mod is trolling then god help us all.

Comments are supposed to be directed to PM, per the MA rules. However, I will be happy to explain it here.

You were asked to dial the near-trolling back, and 'rectified the mistake' in your near-trolling remark by rephrasing it in a manner couched in sarcasm and attitude, which helped me realize that not warning you for the first remark was a mistake that I rectified as well.

Well the MySpacers will be the ones we leave behind to man the anti-Asteroid laser cannons (psst, don't them that they're just super-soakers with laser-tag guns duct-taped to them), while the rest of us man the space ark and get the hell off this target of a planet.

Kidding aside...

We have to got to follow up on this impact, if it happens. There's going to be unparalleled chances for new information about Mars kicked up by this thing. And the impact alone should be a interesting event in and of itself.

Oh well, big mistake on your part.

It'd be interesting if Mars captured the asteroid in a way that would send it smashing into either Deimos or Phobos. I like the thought of a ringed Mars.

I think theres more chance the impact of an asteroid on phobos or Deimos will knock the moons out of orbit long before any break up would occur, and even then depending on the size of the asteroid it'd probably just leave an impact crater wit no other effect.

I wish the guys who built the rovers would start building cars. I mean, did you ever see an GM or Ford as tough as those little guys?

Those were my thoughts when the topic was raised in TNZ.

Would the impact be useful in finding out more about what's under the surface of Mars, or would it just dent the surface?

That depends upon the angle and intensity of any impact. You'll likely be able to get something if it hits, it's just a matter of how much.

It would be really fun if the impact released one of those aquafers that some say might be under the surface there somewhere. Instant frozen lake!
