Asteroid Apophis strike in 2036 downgraded

Earth can breathe a sigh of relief after NASA downgraded the odds of a 270-metre asteroid striking the planet in 2036.
Scientists initially believed there was a 1-in-45,000 chance that Apophis could hit the planet on April 13, 2036.
But the threat was lowered to a 1-in-250,000 chance after researchers recalculated the asteroid's path.
"It wasn't anything to worry about before. Now it's even less so," said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Chesley and his colleagues refined the asteroid's orbit after an astronomer in Hawaii analysed previously unreleased images that gave scientists a better idea of Apophis' position.

Damn! Looks like Bruce Willis and his crack team of rowdy drillers will have to wait for the next one.
 
I'm more grateful that it won't be happening anytime soon. I feared that it would slamming into earth that fateful day, but I'm thankful that you brings this news! Now I can sleep easily!
 
Damnit! I thought that was it. I guess I better start working out and eating right. Fuckin' slacker asteroid ruined my plans!

My first instinct was to treat this seriously, but on second thought, I'm not sure which one of us is missing the sarcasm.

I'm serious, Ghoul. It's laughable that 2012 would be mark a end. True, Mayans calender mark that end in December 21, 2012, but that doesn't mean we will be dead in that fateful day. Mayans never got their chance to finish their calender. It's meaning that it's starting all over. That's what their intentions truly are.
 
Which part of it? The footnote? Or the link to I Am Legend's userpage? (Legend is the foremost--and, as far as I know, only--proponent of the 2012 cataclysm idea on this board. Most references to the idea on the TrekBBS are lampooning him.)
 
The 13th Baktun does indeed fall on December 2012, but many Mayans actually believed the cycle would end after the 20th Baktun, which isn't for another 2500 years. :)
