Assignment Earth: What if...

Awesome little clip on Trekmovie.com and Youtube. Someone used footage from the episode Assignment: Earth, and wrote original music for a cool little opening to the series that could have been. The musical style is remarkably retro and amazingly convincing. Check it out. :D

Trekmovie.com has a nice article on its front page about it, but yeah, that is one of the clips. But this one is better.

I thought both the opening sequences were great. I think of them as the first- and second-season titles. The one with the narration would be the first-season one, since by the second season, the premise would be more established and wouldn't need as much exposition.

The music captured the '60s spy-show style very well without being overtly derivative of any one thing, and it's particularly admirable in this day and age that they actually assembled a real orchestra to record them rather than just trying to fake it electronically. That's a real labor of love.

I've often wondered: had Star Trek spawned a successful spin-off in the 1960s that was not Star Trek branded, how would that have affected to Star Trek franchise as we know it today? I think it would have evolved very differently.

Funny. I've never been that fond of Assignment: Earth. However, just looking at that little glimpse of what might have been, has given me a more open mind when it comes to the episode.
Well done, all involved.

Thanks so much! Both clips were great -- but where is my screen credit? ;)

I thought Assignment Earth was a good episode and could have sustained itself as a series whether or not as a spinoff of Star Trek.

As a spinoff of Star Trek, it could have opened up alot of new storylines, ideas and possibly more fans for Star Trek.

As a standalone series it would have been a good show. Terri Garr was hot and the characters were interesting, so I think it would have had a good run on the air. Even in this scenario I think it would have lent GR more credibility and respect that could have translated into another season or two for Star Trek, seeing how the networks like to keep prime producers happy.

Just look at Aaron Spelling and the shows he had power over, some of which were kept on the air to protect his really hot properties.

I think a series like that would have been good for The Franchise and for The Fandom as a whole. Even if it only lasted one or two seasons, its presence would mean we always had this vision of the Trek Universe in at least two time periods, and with rather different settings and styles of shows.

Fandom folklore would grow that way, and there'd be less resistance or hesitation among fans about things like setting a show on a different ship (or station), or trying to break from the Western genre (the original series) or the Workplace Drama (the 24th/22nd century shows) into something more experimental, or even just different.

Wow...I'm really glad I watched those. I loved the first one mostly because of the effective use of a voiceover series premise synopsis (and all from the original episode, no less).

"That, Miss Lincoln, is my cat!" Who knew I'd eventually own a black at that bears a distinct resemblence to Isis (as I do now).

Assignment Earth was too gimicky to be a show.

Though there is the Eugeneics War novels by Greg Cox that has Mr. Seven, Roberta Lincoln and the rest in it. :vulcan:

Those were great. When I get time, I'm going to re-read them! I would have loved a TV series.

I think I would too. It would be a sort of anti-jack bauer. Which is good, because 24 isn't my thing.

I don't think there is a book like that. Althoguh the Eugenics war was a great novel series. Might be something to think about as a fan fiction. An alternate reality...
