So.. I bought the new Asia CD tonight and at first blush, I'm really happy about it... I had high hopes for the first CD with the original members since "Astra" all those years ago.. I've never been a big fan of what Asia became, so I jazzed when they reformed a couple of years ago.
Basically it's the same sound with an older, more mature spin..
Each are still masters of their craft and have obviously matured since the days of Astra... This effort shows how each as changed stylistically over the years.
Maybe a bit subdued in places but really a pleasant listen.. Kind of like old friends coming around to visit after being gone a long while..
I really doubt this will win them any new fans, but don't think that was the point of it.. As the group has aged, so have the fans and I think this is what we want as a first step.. I'll be interested to see if there's a follow up..
I'd love to see them on tour this summer, but unfortunately, their only New Mexico date falls on the same day as the Rush concert in Albuquerque... And well, we all know who wins that battle!
