As if she didn't know how big a nerd I am already...

^ The only time I've ever had someone comment on my book on public transport was when I was reading a Leonard Nimoy biography - and he quoted lines from The Simpsons rather than Trek.

I was reading Excelsior: Forged In Fire on an airplane, and the woman next to me took it to mean that I 'believed in aliens' and spent the whole flight lecturing me about Area 51 conspiracies. That was... well, amusing at first, annoying after 3 hours. :guffaw:

For those of you who talk about being "embarassed" when your spouses/SO's find out about your ST/SF/F interests... why on Earth (or any other planet) should you feel embarassed? Is the concept of FIAWOL dead these days?

I can't imagine living with/being married to somebody who didn't share at least some of my interests -- and my interests in science fiction/fantasy -- Star Trek and Doctor Who in particular being non-negotiable. Cats, of course, would be the ultimate dealbreaker.

I guess that's a huge reason why I'm not married and don't expect to be. Guys who don't drink, smoke, who keep profanity to a minimum, are into Star Trek and Doctor Who (among other SF on TV), reading, writing, history, astronomy, are at least agnostic (preferably atheist, but pagan is fine too), on my side of the political spectrum.... and love cats... seem to be in short supply around here.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM, ANYWAY? :vulcan:

'Cause it sure isn't me. ;)

Well, that description is almost exactly me, except I'm rather fond of profanity and I haven't much looked at Dr. Who. But I'm already taken...

Actually, my fiancee doesn't share much of my interest in Star Trek, science, politics or reading, and is instead a lover of nature, gardens, history, and art. But our differences are what make us really work, we come at everything from different points of view, fill all the gaps in the other's knowledge and reasoning. I always expected to want a girl that shared all my same obsessions, and now I couldn't imagine someone I just agreed with all the time

And there is nothing at all that I could do at this point to surprise her; she knows exactly how much of a nerd I am.

I wouldn't want somebody I agreed with all the time, either. I prefer to be with people who know how to disagree respectfully with somebody -- back up their own opinions without denigrating others'. I'd want somebody who I could learn from, and who wasn't too proud to learn from me.

Oh, and an interest in gaming is a definite plus as well. :bolian:

I love Star Trek and Doctor Who, yet I still drink (I'm what the government here calls a binge drinker) I admit, I don't smoke (although if certain types of fags are offered it's rude to decline the offer) and I do swear a bit too often, but only in context! I hate cats though, or any type of pet that derives from wild predatory animals and as for my political views, it would be best described as libearl/conservative (ie I think that ALL drugs should be legalised but HMG should double the perscription costs for it) oh, and I'm an atheist! :rommie:

But enough of that......

To answer the original question, my ex and I shared a love of sci fi, the night we first had a conversation, we spent something like four hours meanddering between a load of different genre programmes, but a few weeks later when we had actually "got together" for valentines day she managed to source a Tshirt with the Independants logo on from firefly which even we had only be going out a few weeks, I thought was cool!

That describes me almost to a tee, although I don't know for sure what side of the political spectrum you're on (though I can make an educated guess).

Did we just find Christopher a date? :vulcan:

*g, d, rlh*

And bite me entirely, DeCandido. It's not "nerd". It's "geek". Get it right. :p

My wife has very little interest in Sci-fi, she just looks at my interest in trek as a little quirky.... by the way I smoke cigars and drink very cheap scotch.

Oh and Dimesdan, Americans and Brits have an entirely different definition of fag...Just a heads up.

*giggle* Are you sure you can guess my political leanings? I'm Canadian...

I was under the impression that Christopher already has a SO...? Anyway, we disagree rather emphatically on the merits/not-merits of particular other authors, so I'm not sure if that would be a dealbreaker...

Kind of describes me quite well too, and I hate politics and religion in all forms, so I don't have political leanings.

See what I mean? So many good prospects, here in the forum (and even via PM ;))... and not one of you is within a couple of thousand miles of here, at least! :(

That can change. I come from Germany, my husband is English. We started as pen pals and this year we had our 10th wedding anniversary.

And I know three now-married couples who met at the World Science Fiction Convention varioues years, but lived in different countries at the time they met:

1) an American/Australian couple, now living in Australia
2) an American/Irish couple, now living in Ireland
3) an American/Canadian couple, now living in the U.S.

Gotta love the way science fiction brings people together!
