As "corny" as the animated 1986 Transformers movie is...

Vice Admiral
I find it about five times as entertaining and dramatically satisfying as the recent live-action one.

Am I wrong?

I found it unbearable to sit through with my six-year old, at the time. Like a visit to the dentist, but with worse "music."

Most of his enthusiasms were things I could enjoy, at least second-hand. Most of the parents present seemed to enjoy "The He-Man/She-Ra Movie," for example (at least partly because we took to applauding loudly whenever that old queen Skeletor appeared onscreen). But Franstormers was just awful.

Bay's version features Megan Fox. 'Nuff said.

Both of them, are pretty darn good. I did like the animated movie slightly more though.

I really hate Bay's 2007 movie, and had I not been four when I first saw it, I'd probably hate the 1986 version too.

But, I was four. So I was freaking kookoo for it. Watched it again about 3 years ago for the first time in ages. Didn't hold up nearly as well as I remembered but I still enjoyed it because it was steeped in nostalgia for me.

While both are science fiction films, I can't even begin to compare the two because their stories are so different, as is the visual style of presentation. "Transformers: The Movie" was a galaxy spanning romp featuring some characters we already knew and others we didn't in an unfamiliar world set in the "future" (2005). All that and a hard guitar rockin' soundtrack.

The live action movie was set in "our time" and introduced us to the Transformers as a whole. In that respect the only fair comparison would be to the series pilot "More than meets the eye".

I enjoy both immensely for what they are, but comparing to two is very much apples to oranges to me.

I like both.
However, since as a 10yr old I vividly recall seeing Optimus Prime die in full on theatrical wide screen at the cinema I'm always partial to the animated '86 film.

Now though Megan Fox has something Arcee could never match up against.

The 86 version had much better animation than the TV series, and had a few neat moments like flying skateboards and the siege of Autobot city which killed almost everybody. Other than that, it was a bit forgettable, and I will never understand why it had to be a "rock'n'roll movie." Seriously, what was with all of the Stan Bush music and no name bands? The best part of this experience was years later when I was watching Boogie Nights, and Mark Walberg crooned out, "You got the touch! You got the power!!"

The 2007 version was a loud, blurry mess. I was glad when it was over. And yes, the best part was the girl in the tight shirt.

I see great potential in the Transformers franchise but don't think either version was at all interesting. They both had thier moments, but they could have been much better.

As far as 80's toy related animation, I always thought the statue of liberty opening in G.I. Joe the movie is awesome. The rest of the movie never even comes close to the greatness of that scene.

You can't be wrong about your opinion.

Now listen. This one's for you...
"You got the TOUCH... you got the POWER!!!"

The first 25 minutes after the intro, from Ironhide sizzling and wanting to bust Deceptachops until Astrotrain soars away to Cybertron with a load of busted Deceptachops, it's not stop "Me Grimlock bash brains" action.

Anyway... the Transformers live on in countless timelines and realities. They all have good points and bad points. Though I've yet to see any good points about Beast Wars.

The problem with the cartoon movie was that it was basically an excuse to sell toys, so almost everyone you knew from the TV show/toy line was either killed, turned into completely different robot or missing for the majority of the movie and you spent the whole movie following around characters you'd never seen before.

I hope (but doubt) that the live-action film will try and reproduce that opener.

Nope, it's a great movie and kicks the ass of Bay's live action.
It's pretty heavy going though to watch a toyline get wiped out in one movie. But at least the Transformers are characters, not charactures like in the live action, neither do we have to spend most of the time watching human's with their masturbation jokes and asses hanging out of their pants.

Ah man, sit down and watch it. Seriously, give it a serious try. The animation is now seriously dated, and I get that you don't like robots that turn into animals, but actually listen to the writing and performances. It really is a terrific series.

As for the two movies, I think they're both great. The animated one has the advantage of being full of the characters I love, the live action one has some ridiculously kickass action. Personally I like living in a world where I can enjoy both.

I prefer 1986's Citizen Kane/Mr.Spock TF:TM to Bay's 2007 film.

Something “grotesque” 'bout them thar Bayformers.

Megan Izza Fox (Izza being her middle name) vs Arcee? No contest! Arcee's somewhat of an overblown “Stepford Wife” yes?

Aragorn makes good points about TF:TM'86 though.

Showing new TFs like they'd always been around & then making them TF:TM's stars:confused:

Exception there being Mr.Spock's Galvatron.

The scene where Citizen Kane's UNICRON turns Megatron into Galvatron (Spockatron:beer:) was AWESOME to see on the movie screen. Memorable, extravagant, iconic scene was.

billcosby is correct also that each TF universe has it's +'s & -'s.

billcosby, I know where you're coming from re:Beast Wars, but be more open to it like I've become.

If you get the chance watch the BW episode called “Possessed”, or is it “Posession”?

I saw it on YouTube a month ago. Very impressive it was. Only BW episode I ever saw.

TF:TM, IMO & in hindsight, ironically got the ball rolling for G1 TFs demise.

Enjoy both, but '86 still edges out for the win simply because it was the Transformers I grew up with, those were the characters [Toys] I was playing with as a kid. The new one, cool visually but-- for me at least-- lacks the heart of the original movie.
