As a Standalone: Was Trek XI a Good Movie?

As a standalone movie, I'd probably never have watched it - and for certain I wouldn't have enjoyed it. The plot is weak to nonexistant, the whole movie depends on way too many special effects and it's clearly meant to address the MTV-generation with short attention spans.

Why I liked it reasonably enough anyway? Because among all those flaws there's enough that reminds me of TOS.

As a stand alone it would be an average movie. Not something I would re-watch. I'm a big fan of sci-fi but the story is a bit thin. The fun of this new movie was to see how characters we already knew were depicted and met each other in this re-imagination.

As a stand alone - the assumption being this is the first Trek to be seen by anyone anywhere - it is a good film, but not near as good. This movie works in part because of the knowledge people bring to it. Not just the fans, but everyone. I would say it is similar to the way movie-goers carry expectations/knowlege about other well known fictional characters into the theater; like Dracula, Jessie James, Peter Pan, Cinderella, etc. The characterization for Kirk et al., is all on the screen, but much of it is done in short hand, and as alluded to above, not all of it makes perfect sense. But none of that matters. Before the opening credits rolled most movie-goers knew more or less where they were going to end up, and who it was on the screen they were going with, they were just not entirely sure what route would be taken to get there. And so it worked.

And, in a world with no prior Trek, the enter Prime Spock business is utterly unnecessary and muddled.

as a stand alone this movie reminiscent of galaxy quest, but then again galaxy quest is a parody of star trek.

so as it stands on its own, i wouldnt call it scifi, more like an action/comedy that takes place in space.
I would of watch it once had a few laughs and then forgot about it the next morning.
