Arts & Crafts anyone?

In early November a new Michael's Arts & Crafts will be opening in our town not far from where I work. I'm quite curious because I had actually never heard of Michael's Arts & Crafts until I learned that one would be opening here, and this despite that Michaels has been in Canada for several years. I do remember a chain of arts and crafts stores called Leisure World and another called Lewiscraft that both folded many, many years ago. You could find lots of interesting things there if you were into creating things yourself. Back in the '70s and early '80s I bought a lot of models and modelling supplies at Leisure World. The one I remember best was on the upper level of the Square One shopping centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

Now, of course, many of us are modellers here and I've seen quite a bit of talent in terms of science fiction kit bashing original ideas and designs. But does anyone here have any other arts-and-crafts interests. I know it's actually quite a broad hobby that could encompass many things. I think a lot of folks might get the idea that arts-and-crafts focusses on sewing and other crafts many women might favour, but I think it's much broader than that. Hell, woodworking is a form of arts-and-crafts.

I've long been interested in making things from scratch rather than just trying to buy them ready made. I like trying to make distinctive Christmas decorations. Over the years I've made a couple of rather large reindeer with lights that mount on the front of the house. This year I'm planning on making a second vintage looking Santa Claus costume. And I also enjoy thinking up and making indoor decorations. One of my favourites from many, many years ago was of a log cabin in winter with bare branches as trees in winter and a small deer on the lawn and a small wreath on the door. I don't know what happened to that cabin, but I'd like to make another one.

Anyone else with arts-and-crafts interests beyond plastic model making?
