Art Asylum Communicator

Kicks some serious ass. Nice work, for $26.

I recommend purchasing one before they are all gone.

yeah i picked one up too, i also have the vegas comm, but the sound chip in the art asylum one is much better (it doesnt sound like it was recorded 30 years ago)

I bought one, too. It is cool with the moire pattern actually turning. I also got their phaser. Equally cool.

Ordered mine today. I should have it by Friday. Opted for the standard edition as the grille is supposedly not as "plated" looking as the "exclusive". Fans have discovered how to activate the extra phrase by "severing" a jumper solder point on the circuit board. (Read the Art Asylum forums for the exact directions.) The threads also describe how the moire effect can be made to look better. (The simplest method is the slightly raise the inner spinning disc upon its shaft so as to be more flush with the outer, transparent disc.)

Sincerely,

Bill

These comms have been extensively discussed on some other forums, mostly ones dedicated to Trek props. The AA comms use the same mold as the Star Trek The Experience (STTE) comms, which themselves used the Master Replicas mold, so all 3 comms have VERY similar/the same body shapes. For the money, these can't be beat, and for those who want to do modifications there are many options. These are going for anything from $19.99 to $29.99 at various outlets and are literally flying off the shelves, so get them while you can. I have already purchased a bunch and have given a few away as gifts to trek fans who have loved them.

Well, that's a really nice gesture! And at just 20 bucks, it's a fairly affordable novelty gift.

Sincerely,

Bill

P.S. I just got my UPS tracking notice stating I should get it tomorrow, the 27th.

Personal note to self: Suck up to Trekwatcher, immediately! :rommie:

Many thanks!

For those who wanted a Master Replicas comm and could not afford it or missed out for any reason, these AA comms are worth getting given that they have the same shape, and the features (spinning moire, voice files, metal flipgrid, etc.) are nice. Even the STTE comms (which retailed for $50-60 each, and had more metal content and a more robust feel) are out of production as well and are pricey on eBay.

I have got to get me one of these! :bolian: Money is a little tight right now but I will find a way to make it work. I love my TOS phaser and it looks lonely over there on the shelf.

Now if they would just do a very nice, very accurate tricorder, I would be all set.

According to the Art Asylum forums, yes, AA/DST will eventually release a TOS tricorder, including the little hand scanner McCoy used. Supposedly, someone associated with TrekMovie.com saw a prototype but was not allowed to photograph it.

As to when, Mogg only knows.

Sincerely,

Bill

P.S. It looks like UPS mucked up my comm' delivery. According to the tracking notice, it was reported to be on the final delivery van since 6 this morning. But here it is 7 PM and no sign of it. No, I'm not faulting the distributor. I ordered it Tuesday, and they had it shipped Wednesday (yesterday) the next day (fast service). Probably UPS' computer is stating "Wildwood Lane" when the street is marked "Drive". (This has happened before.) "Duh...We can't find no Wildwood Lane, boss..." Oy, vey!

Sincerely,

Bill

An Art Asylum tricorder would be very, very cool. The Playmates tricorder was a piece of shit.

Of course, their communicator wasn't all that great, either.

I'd like to see them do some TOS movie props, too. I've always wanted a TSFS phaser and communicator.

It happens, I work for UPS and we get alot of that. What I think more of the problem is that it was probably misloaded onto the wrong truck. Hey we're only humans that load these things :)

Well, allow me to make a public retraction, Brannigan. I refreshed the tracking page just a few minutes ago and suddenly it stated the package was delivered around 7:40 PM. Sure enough, when I checked the front door, the box was wedged as tight to the corner by the steps as possible.

I've just never known UPS to deliver this late at night. Usually, if it hasn't arrived by 6 PM, it's the next day.

Again, please accept my apology, Brannigan. (Shoot, no "embarrassed" smilie when I need it.)

Sincerely,

Bill

^ That would be really nice. I don't have any of the TOS movie props.

And yes, the Playmates tricorder was a disappointment. Bleh. But I kept the communicator on my desk at work and we had a lot of fun with that. I would come in and hit the play button every morning to see what crazy crap the night shift had put on the voice chip. Actually I found it last fall going through some old files. And when I put some fresh batteries in it, I found that I still had my old manager singing "Kiss My F****** Ass" from "The South Park Movie" on it.

And thanks for the info Redfern. You made me a very happy man who is really to old to be playing with toys. :bolian:

Actually, the AA/DST TOS Tricorder is tentatively slated for fall 2008 release, and those guys are usually relatively on time.

The Playmates tricorder was really the weakest link in that whole line. Even with the problems they had, the TOS P2 and Comm were not bad given the era in which they were produced. Why they made the tricorder 1/2 scale I will never know, seeing as they had made much larger pieces (mostly ships) for the same toy line. The only good thing about the Playmates TOS tricorder was the sounds.

If so, sweet! I'll soon have the film quality equivalent of the ol' "Exploration Set". (Hey, don't knock that kit. It was fabulous for an 11 year old after having to make do with Flair brand pens for phasers and make-up compacts for communicators.)

Sincerely,

Bill

I got your back on that one Bill, I explored many a hundred acre on the farm with my Exploration Kit, at age 13-14. :vulcan:
Although my favorites are the TOS #2 Phaser, the TNG tricorder & Alternate TNG commbadge (Riker's Captain rank).

Except for the tiny detail that there was no such song in "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut". :D

Perhaps you mean "Uncle F**ka"?
