Armin Shimerman in Quark makeup on Live with Regis & Kathie Lee

He was 'more Quark' without the makeup in the interview than he was in 'Far Beyond the Stars'. I guess he was acting in 'Far Beyond the Stars' and was consciously trying NOT to be Quark.

Wow, never saw him without the makeup before.

Haven't you seen "Far Beyond the Stars"?

I have already corrected myself in that I have seen him without makeup in Buffy ;)

However. No, in fact I haven't seen far beyond the stars. I only started re-watching DS9 recently and am still at the start of Season 2.
Back when I first saw Ds9 as a young teen I would have likely seen that the episode took place in the past and turned off the TV again.

I think what really didn't make me recognize him is that he is an excellent actor. He moves and speaks differently in his various roles.

He's not the only one. It's hard to believe that the actor that plays Martok is the same one that plays Laas.

Or that Gowron is the dude counting money in 'Badda-Bing-Badda-Boom'....DS9 was ****ing awesome with these double roles, I've seen the series through close to two dozen times and it seems there's always one more that I didn't notice.

I'm sure that it was mostly a financial thing, but constantly discovering new things keeps a series alive long after it's end.

I don't think it was financial. These actors are all very good. I would have done the same regardless of money.

Jeffrey Combs plays three parts, BTW. Two in the same episode.

Er: Make that four!

I don't think it was financial.

If that's true than the people making the calls on DS9 deserve much more credit than this board gives them, seeing as we're still discussing this twenty years later.

As I said, these actors are all very good. It was smart to use their talents as much as possible.

Could you imagine a better Vorta than Weyoun for example?

^ Oh sorry I would have seen him as Principal Snyder in Buffy, just didn't recognize him straight away.

Really? I always thought he looked pretty much the same with or without the makeup.

But was he really the first Ferengi? I don't think he was the first one seen onscreen.

If they based the makeup on his actual head, then yeah. I'll accept that.

You've already said that.

In point of fact there were FOUR Ferengi in "The Last Outpost" and the first one seen is Daimon Tarr via the viewer, played by Mike Gomez. As such Shimmerman isn't the first Ferengi the audience sees.

Awesome, Maurice, I was just considering this.

He could definitely consider himself the 'quintessential' Ferengi, the character all past and future Ferengi could be judged against, but certainly not 'the original'.

I assume the line in the interview was ad-libbed and 'original' was just the word that came to mind.

No, read it again.

Regardless, if I wanted to repeat myself ... so what?

Geez, people here can be so freaking anal.

Accepting the vernacular use of 'anal' in this context, I think this site would be a lot less fun and a lot less discussion would ensue if Trekkies weren't so uptight and detail-oriented.

What would "the original Ferengi" mean to an actor? Not the first one the audience sees on screen -- it would be the first one in rehearsal or the first one with a significant role.

I don't have to imagine it, Iggy Pop did it.

Iggy Pop was a terrific Vorta low-level manager and you can just imagine how he would have conducted his debriefing with Keevan if he'd managed to retrieve him alive. However, Weyoun was a more sophisticated Vorta altogether, planning strategy for a vast galactic war, serving a Founder directly, negotiating with senior leaders of other Alpha Quadrant civilizations.
