Are you surprised at the IMDB ratings for all Trek Series ? (TNG 1st, DIS last)

Obviously, opinions within the Fandom will vary. However, these ratings are interesting. Not surprising that Discovery is low ( it's my least favorite myself). But I must say I am surprised it's dead last and by that wide margin amoung live action shows.

TNG, TOS being that high is not surprising.

Strange New Worlds being ahead of anything modern shouldn't be a shock. But the margin is. It's waaay ahead among the live modern shows.

Anyone else surprised how they rank?

TNG 8.7
TOS 8.4
SNW 8.3
DS9 8.1
VOY 7.9
LW 7.8
PRO 7.6
ENT 7.6
PIC 7.5
TAS 7.2
DIS 7.0

I'd like to see where PIC would drop to if we could pluck all the season 3 votes out. Not to prove anything, just out of curiosity. ;)

Just checked : 7.1 ( the average of s1 and s2 together based on individual episode scores)

I'm extremely surprised that they are all that high.

I meant "prove it sucks" and have made the appropriate adjustment. There are folks in the SNW forum who are constantly claiming the show is bad citing the low rating it supposedly (according to them) has on IMDB as proof.

Recency bias is definitely a thing.

Perhaps. But TOS you would think would be lower then. When Imdb started to exist, TOS was almost 30 years old.

You could argue nostalgia is a factor. But If so, maybe one could say nostalgia and recency bias cancel each other out?

Imdb is definitely flawed. However, lazy ,review bombers/haters tend use social media. Its faster and less work then getting an Imdb account, selecting a specific episode and downvotjng just to hate on it . Not saying it doesn't happen but I'm not sure it's as widespread as it would seem. There's also those who review postive en mass.

And considering all series is 7.0 or higher, there seems to be an inflated floor rating baseline for all shows.

7.0 for DSC is pretty good, considering a lot of people probably review-bombed the Hell out of the show.

TNG being at the top isn't a surprise. TOS just underneath it also isn't a surprise. SNW over DS9? Setting aside that I don't like SNW, I'm still surprised it's ahead of DS9. I thought DS9 was the critical darling of Star Trek. If TOS and TNG are the mainstream classics, then DS9 is the underground classic. But anyway...

The first two seasons of PIC are what probably knocked that series down overall. And I say this as someone who likes the first two seasons. The first more so than the second, but still. I know what the general reception is.

Everything else is pretty much where I thought it would be, regardless of my own opinions. Well, TAS seems a bit higher than what I'd expect, but that's about it.

Imdb is definitely flawed.
Very much so. Still interesting nonetheless, especially after those flaws are taken into account.

For example: anything with a female lead, I automatically add half a point in my mind. To off-set the "They made it woke!" reactionaries, and their predecessors from the '90s and '00s: those "They made it PC!" reactionaries. Many of whom are probably the same people, among the older set.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what review bombing is ?? . I thought it's when you use multiple accounts and go on a mission to slander something. Alot of people felt that Discovery went against their view of Star Trek. That's why I see many of those " I joined to review just to show my displeasure of something." Kinda reviews. Is that review bombing? With Discovery, I seem to get that distain from actyal people I know in real life . None of the people I know who are Trek fans are big fans of the show. Me personally, I do like the familiar Trek feeling ( why I became a fan) but a good television show can trump that. For me that was DS9. For me Discovery was neither . But thats personal taste ( did not resonate with characters, stories and tone) . But if you have the familiar Trek feeling, your half way there on potential appeal.

As for SNW, I'm not very surprised it's a head of DS9 after reflecting on it. I'm surprised how many people i know who like Voyager over DS9. My boss at work, a Voyager fan, just did a thorough watch of DS9. His conclusion- he feels DS9 is the best written Star Trek. But still prefers Voyager . That kinda sums it up. Now I do like SNW a lot. But admittedly mainly because I love the characters. Using the cozy Trek formula/ stories solidifies that even more.

I was surprised by those ratings at first, because TOS and TNG are pretty damn high for series with such wild swings in quality. But then I realised those are what people are rating the series overall, not an average of the episodes.

Here's what an average of the episode ratings looks like by comparison:

PRO 8.0
SNW 7.9
LW 7.8
PIC 7.6
DS9 7.5
ENT 7.5
TOS 7.3
TNG 7.3
VOY 7.3
DIS 6.8
TAS 6.6

I guess people didn't get the memo to review bomb Lower Decks.

i am a bit surprised SNW is ahead of DS9, and i do like it, mostly. a bit surprised TAS is ahead of disco, honestly, because i feel like less people know it exists? idk, i didn't until i found the whole thing on tape at salvation army one day, after years of thinking M'ress was some fan creation people took a shine too lul. but i guess it's on the streamign and stuff now.

there were so many things with disco that just... did not vibe right and it didn't really feel trek until after the time jump.
saru is basically the only character i care about. and the cat, because cat. also i kept expecting it was going to be an agent from like the people that set up gary seven

why is lower decks "lw" instead of "ld"

I bet TAS got more votes there because of the voice cast. Folks figured with the TOS additions, it had to be at least marginally better than Discovery/.

LD is the way!

Here's another one for you, average number of votes per episode:

SNW 5,275
PIC 5,043
TOS 4,300
TNG 3,955
DIS 3,818
DS9 2,442
VOY 2,205
ENT 1,969
LW 1,130
TAS 894
PRO 500

Probably gives a bit of a hint at the viewing figures of each of the modern series (the number of votes drops with each episode, so Discovery's got a lower average mostly because it lasted longer).
