Are you "out" with being a geek, or still in the closet?

So, are you "out" as a geek?

  • "OUT"? It's obvious I'm a geek, nothing to be "out" about

At uni, no-one thinks scifi/fantasy is geeky. I know people who are considered socially awkward, but that's because they're a little weird anyway, but that has nothing to do with their preferences.

Then again, we philologists are all bad at maths and physics. :p

I find that when enough like-minded people meet up in large numbers in a given place, the very fabric of what is considered "geeky" and what is considered "cool" alters in a considerable way. In the case of Uni, there's the old stereotype that people with more complex ways of thinking will contemplate, accept and adapt to other interests more easily (and sometimes several times and in several different ways depending on whereabouts in Uni you hang out) - but it can apply to any situation, club, clique or demographic you can think of. :)

In fact, I'm wondering if the very shape of the Universe can be altered if enough people believe and think in one particular way. I could create a FTL space engine based on that sort of principle... ;)

Huh. Improbability drives and Bistromathics not good enough for you? Always trying to be a *Clever Clogs...

:D

* Do not invent these. Society isn't ready for them yet.

But my Omniversal Mindhive Field Generator (OMFG) is a wonderful way of crossing vast interstellar distances without all that precarious mucking about with Bistromathics! (so it says in the brochure) :D

That's all well and good until someone with a Seizure Transformation Field-Unraveller (STFU) comes along and...and...and I'm really not sure where I'm going with this...

You lost me at OMFG, but I liked the sound of it, so if anyone asks, I approve. :p

Go me and my superior intellect.

I let my friends know what I like and if they don't like it, it's not worth the friendship. I try not to proclaim it to the world that much though, only if the topic arises.

Option #1.

Trek since I was young, Trek when I was a teen, and Trek in adult life, though new Trek is garbage to me (Nemesis, Enterprise, JJ Trek, and probably what ever [non JJ] comes next).

Also watched shows like:
"Time Trax"
"Forever Knight"
"7 Days"
"The Twilight Zone"
(original)
"The X-Files"
"First Wave"
"Quantum Leap"
(off the top of my head)

Oh, that and 99% of the time I listen to something, it's TV & film scores.

Anti pop culture, dont' dress anything like other people my age, and I am into the arts and writing, so ... nerd. But a hot nerd.

I also wear a geeky t-shirt to my bowling league every week - whether it's something amusing like the one in thestrangequark's photo:

I love that quote from RvB, and would love to get the shirt, but I couldn't wear it outside my circle of friends who get the joke. And I wouldn't want to lead anyone on, I have trouble enough getting girls as it is  That said, cool shirt bro! :techman:

^ Oh, sure - there's more than one kind of geekness, after all. Well, OK, I think counting is a pretty basic requirement for...well, for being lots of stuff, but you can be pretty darn geeky and not know much about physics. I'm kind of a science dabbler myself, so I ought to know. I'm more of a scifi geek than an actual science geek, though I do enjoy it.

I put myself in the second category - I make no secret about my geekish tendencies - but still, I think a lot of people just don't realize this about me. Maybe because I have lots of interests, some considered geekish and some not. But still, you'd think the Romulan Warbird ornament, the Gorn bobblehead and various bits of Marvin the Martian memorabilia in my office would be a dead giveaway. I think lots of people just aren't very good at noticing stuff.

You have your own little Warbird! That is so cool.

Is it the D'deridex class or the Valdore/Mogai class?

Thus is my nerdness confirmed.

Out, but I don't broadcast it. Nobody's surprised by my geekness. They're usually more surprised by my enjoyment of romantic comedies and Jane Austen novels.

You have nothing to prove to me, my friend. I always had utter faith in your nerdness.

D'deridex, but of course. Because it's the coolest. And only a total nerd would have a favorite among the Romulan warships, so thus is my nerdness confirmed.

I really need a little stand for it - so it has something to hang on. Right now, it's sitting there in its little box, begging to be let out to go use its disrupters to kick some Klingon butt.
