Are you "out" with being a geek, or still in the closet?

So, are you "out" as a geek?

  • "OUT"? It's obvious I'm a geek, nothing to be "out" about

I was known at my law school for being a ST fan, and if asked, would unapoligetically say, "Yeah, I'm a geek."

So, how many here are not only geeks, but out about it?

Yeah, just about everyone I know is aware of my geekossity. And my sister's the same.

:D

I'm trying to transition, but I don't know if I'll ever tell people about TBBS (besides my husband and brother who already know about it).

I am so out:

Although people are often surprised that I am a geek. Nerdy tee shirts aside, I tend to dress fashionably and with femininity, I look young, and I have a girlish voice. People have told me outright they didn't expect me to be interested or knowledgeable about things like physics, literature, etc. I'm usually left wondering whether I should take it as an insult or a compliment.

I sort of came out as a geek when LotR became cool among teenagers. Everyone was raving and I was like "hey, I've been a fan of all this crap for years now, not fair!". But nobody cared about people being geeks unless they started getting on everyone else's nerves. I never did that with my love of scifi/fantasy or books. So there you have it.

I'm a geek and my wife is a nerd.

Nothing to be out about. I made no secret to liking Star Trek in grade school. On top of all that, I was great at math, I was in the marching band, and I have a B.S. and M.S. and Physics. Then while working on Astronomy projects in grad school, I learned about Linux and I've been a computer geek since then.

First off, great shirt! :techman:

Secondly I get that a bit as well. I've been doing mostly physical jobs over the last few years so people are surprised when they find out it's pretty bright in this skull of mine. They just never imagine that the guy who cuts the lawn and trims the hedges can have others interests. I choose to take it as a compliment.

I have quotes from sci-fi shows in my MSN status messages, I have my massive sci-fi DVD collection out on display half the time, and I openly admit to running Linux. You'd have to spend 5 minutes with me to figure out that I'm into geeky stuff, though I don't really fit in with any of the geek stereotypes aside from my interests, so that balances things out a bit.

I'm out...but my girl thinks it's endearing so it's all good.
At this point, what choice does she have? ;)
My wife started out thinking it was endearing. Now she simply finds it tolerable.

This does not bode well.
Well, I'll have been married 11 years this month, so it takes a while. That being said, my wife is saint for all the tolerance and patience she's shown over the years.

I just realized I didn't say what I answered, but yeah it's "Yes, but I don't proclaim it much".
