Are you at work?

I'm usually at work when I'm posting here. Since my job isn't something I do nonstop while I'm here, there's plenty of dead time (varying by day, of course) to screw around on the computer. Otherwise I wouldn't have nearly as many posts as I do.

I never look in here while I am at work. At work I stick to newssites and email.. possibly do some looking for recipes. But most of the time I am just plain BUSY.
I do take breaks though, because otherwise my brain boils over ;)

Here I am, back to quibbling with Walter. This time he's trying to tell me that the term translation needed an overhaul. That old chatterbox.

Since there is no Canadian holiday today (I assume), I hope there are more people sharing the joys of work now?

Ugh. Well, I finally called it quits around 9:00 PM.

I didn't quite meet my self-imposed deadline for completing my manuscript, but I came close. I should be done by this time tomorrow.

Better luck today. :)

What's the dissertation about, by the way? If you don't mind my asking.

^The Black and Tans--British police and paramilitary forces in the Irish War of Independence (1920-21). Who they were, what they did, and why they did it.

It was a fascinating topic, at first--and I'm hoping book-buyers will share my initial fascination. But I've been working on this, off and on, for more than nine years, and now I just want to get the damn thing off my desk and move on to a new project.

It does sound very intriguing, no doubt about that.

After nine years it is not surprising that you tire of the subject. Book-buyers will certainly feel your initial fascination as well, and they can put the book down when they are done. :)

Any ideas already on the next topic you might pursue?

I will shortly begin working on my thesis which until now has the working title of "Representation of Foreigners in American Media". I have yet to find enough literature and to trim that title into something more precise, but that is what I will be immersed in as soon as Benjamin and one other paper are off the table.

Well, I checked in on my job (dropped off a few books, and helped sort out some questionmarks around the renovation job we (read I ) have heading at work. My boss was very friendly and told me to go home and relax on my holidays lol. It was nice getting to just leave whenever I wanted to ;)
But now I am back, after having been out walking to and from there, so time to be lazy.

You are too good an employee!

But since I shall not be able to enjoy it myself, tell me what being lazy entails for you. Lounging about? Tv? More lounging about?

Lazy for me, means reading my newly bought foodiemagazine, while playing around on the internet. Occationally taking a break to drink some water and kiss my boyfriend. In a few hours I might cook something...

Reading, playing, kissing. Eventually topped off by eating.

You, lady, know how to live.

Well, I certainly hope so.

And I must admit--even after nine years, I'm still finding things that surprise me.

On my last research trip, for example, I found a case in which two Black and Tans took it into their heads to rob a pub in a nearby community.

Only one of them had been issued with a revolver--so they stole the Head Constable's revolver. Then they stole two bicycles belonging to their Irish colleagues, and pedaled off to commit their crime. I guess they hoped to put everything back before anybody noticed.

But then they botched the robbery. They shot two men, wounding one and killing the other--and somehow managed to leave the Head Constable's revolver behind at the scene.

When they got back to their station, the one Black and Tan stuffed his own revolver into the Head Constable's holster. His injured partner in crime came up with a lame story about how he had left the station to relieve himself, and gotten jumped by mysterious men in trench coats.

Of course, nobody believed them. After speaking to witnesses, the Head Constable checked his holster, said "WTF? This isn't my revolver!" and arrested both of them.

This was a convenient discovery for me, because it fit my argument about the relationship between British and Irish police perfectly. Whether a Black and Tan got away with something like this depended on his relationship with his colleagues--especially his Irish colleagues. Irish cops were willing to look the other way if the Black and Tans executed insurgents and burned the businesses and homes of revolutionaries--especially if they knew the perpetrators. In fact, the Irish police did quite a bit of executing and burning themselves.

But they were not willing to tolerate non-political crimes against civilians, especially if these crimes were committed by men they didn't know. In cases like this, they were more than willing to break the wall of silence.

A quickie article based on my MA thesis topic. I had initially hoped to stretch it out into a book, but I've done a lot of additional research, and have concluded that there just isn't enough information available to warrant a book-length study.

Then, a study of colonial warfare in British Somaliland during the Edwardian period.

I will shortly begin working on my thesis which until now has the working title of "Representation of Foreigners in American Media". I have yet to find enough literature and to trim that title into something more precise, but that is what I will be immersed in as soon as Benjamin and one other paper are off the table.
That sounds like a very interesting topic. What time period were you thinking of examining? I ask because, as a film noir fan, I've been struck by the number of golden-age Hollywood films that were made by recent immigrants. This, I think, would complicate what exactly constitutes "American" media.

I have a job, I absolutely hate it, I am job hunting but have NO clue what I want to do which is making it very hard.

In the background: TrekBBS. It sits there, taunts me with promises of fun, rainbows, and general merriness, while Walter keeps on rambling.

So, instead of giving in and immersing myself in the big no-no, I allowed myself to open one thread and keep an eye on it from time to time.

Yeah, that's how it starts. One thread. Just one. Then it's one thread to cheer up and another thread to wind down. Then it's one thread per forum, because they all work in slightly different ways. Before you know it, you're reading the entire board, hours fly by and when you leave, you're desperate enough for your next hit that you go out and rob a bank just to have enough cash to quit work and take browsing up full-time.

Are you at work as well?

I don't really get the opportunity to browse the net much at work. Well, that's not totally true, but my browsing time comes in short bursts, rather than a good lengthy period. So I tend to read the news or check the markets or answer my email rather than having the time to read/post on the board. I get online more in the evenings.
