Are you an EVE online player?

HAL.9000

Lieutenant Commander
I have a love/hate relationship with this game.

I subbed for a year then closed my account after the debacle last fall of broken patches and optional patches to fix the broken patches.:wtf:

This spring I re-subbed for a month to see what has changed. Many improvements, including numerous intermittent patches instead of one huge/buggy one every few months.

Still....

The game is just too "pew-pew" for me. They boast a player driven economy and corporations with stocks and taxing, but it's all fluff. There is no central bank, no central stock exchange. Unless you want to risk using the off-site player driven ones...which I wont.

I tried ST-online ad the one plus is that the missions are varied, actually interesting and fun. Eve missions are repetitive and boring.

I just wish ST-online had EVE's kick-ass graphics. STO's graphics are a little too cartoonish for my tastes.

Anyway, EVE has a long way to go. Too adolescent and not cerebral enough for those interested in the white collar side of space domination. I resub again for a month come this winter/2011 just to see what has changed. It has so much potential, but lousy direction IMO.

Comments?

I am sure someone will be along shortly. :)

I do have a question...Is EVE a good game? I play WOW sometimes and enjoy it...but have heard good things about EVE.

[edit] My question is a more of WOW Vs EVE thing.

I was going to ask also. The only MMO I've ever played was Final Fantasy XI (my still plays). I just didn't like that, would EVE be any different?

I've never played WoW so I cant compare. It is "hardcore" though in that when you lose a ship in battle...you really do lose a ship. There is no repeat....no second chance. Trial and error learning is expensive. So you risk your investments every time you leave your station.

EvE is not really set up for the solo player. Player run gangs roam jump-gates looking for a quick kill. Some of the game mechanics can be exploited to cheat you...if you are not careful like certain "contract" and in-station trade transactions.

The "bounty hunter" system is broken and I'll explain why:

When you "die" in EVE a clone takes your place. If you have a large bounty on your head all you need to do is get a "friend" to kill you. He collects the bounty. You come back as a clone, then you split the bounty with your friend. Nonsense like that is what hurts EVE.

I made my money as a courier pilot. It was slow income. The big payoffs where flying to hazardous areas.
I didn't always make it. It hurts to lose your cargo ship along with all the contents you are shipping (which the attackers can collect if it survives) as well as the collateral you put down on accepting the assignment in the first place. Ouch!!!

It's a brutal learning process not because the game is hard to learn, but because not everything is explained clearly like what to expect when you fly on 0.0 security space and the sudden appearance of warp-bubbles when you get there.
Expect to spend ALOT of time on the EVE forums gathering info.

Eve is best introduced by having someone hold your hand initially until you get the "feel" of the environment you are in. Joining a new player corp initially may help.

The game does make dor some good reading, but then you remember that it is just a game and makes some of these years long scams see pathetic.
