Chocolate is used in chili because it gives depth the flavor of the chili, giving the flavor richness to go with the spicy. I use it in one of my beef chili recipes. It also helps to thicken the chili.
I have diabetes also. It fairly gallops through my family. My parents and my grandparents also had the disease so there wasn't a lot of sugar being eaten in my family. I think it is genetic in my family's case. We aren't even pudgy people. So, not addicted to sugar.
