Are you a organ donor ?

A guy I know on LJ has donated one of his kidneys.
Anyway, yes I'm happy for my organs to be taken once I'm dead - or even while I'm alive if someone needs a kidney (is there anything else you can donate while you're still alive?).
I find it horrifying that after I'm gone my family are going to have to go through the experience 1001001's dad did. Why couldn't they just take a general answer of "Yes, take what you need".

All of my organs are no good to man nor beast. I don't even have a pipe organ, a Hammond organ or a Bontempi organ to donate.

Well, I guess the question is somehow incorrectly worded, but my guess is that meant "are you registered as a prospective organ donor?" or something like that.

Me, I am considering it. I used to have a serious neurotic hangup about organ donation, but I'm gradually getting over it.
That being said, I'm pretty sure I could not have my *whole body* donated after I die. There's just something that's way too gruesome about the thought of my body staring up at medical students who are cutting into me. If I decide to become a donor I will insist that they cremate me after they take my organs.

I've never drank, smoked or done any drugs my whole life(not once). I think my body parts will be pretty healthy.
I should look into how to become one. Here in the US you have to get a card unlike in some other countries (as Roger Wilco mentioned).
Really? Maybe it varies by state and you might have to do that where you live.
In the two states I have lived in (Illinois and California), organ donation is indicated on a state ID/driver's license. You just check the box on your own on back of the Illinois license, and that acts as the legal document. Once you get it renewed, they can also print "Donor" next to your picture.

Two true stories:
1) About 2 years after my initial diagnosis and follow-up surgery for testicular cancer, I was asked by my doctor during a monthly follow-up exam if a Urologist Intern could join him. At first, I did the old, "Gee, it's a woman" thought and then realized, "Hey, she needs to learn and by letting her examine you she's getting an education that may help people years down the road". So I told the doctor, "No problem". He examined me, she examined me, and I didn't die of indignation.
2) I had a nasty ear infection about 15 years ago and went to the ear doctor for an appointment. Once in the exam room, he introduced me to his Intern (once again, a female) and asked if it would be permissible for her to examine me. I responded, "Absolutely, because we all have to learn some time." She was greatly relieved and all went well.
So suck it up and don't worry about medical students cutting up your carcass. That "minor" contribution will have a prolonged affect for years or even decades.
I remember this concern from previous discussions on this subject. Whatever your ultimate decision ends up being I'm at least glad you gave the issue a little more thought.
Funny you should mention this. I was just about to point out that when someone talks about organ donation the focus always seems to be on the abdominal organs.
Corneas can bring sight to the blind, a deaf person may hear again (or for the first time) using donations, skin can be used for temporary grafts for burn victims, stem cells may save a person from cancer, and more. There are so many other parts of the body (beyond the traditional heart, kidney, liver, etc.) being donated today it's hard to keep up. So maybe you'll get lucky and there won't be any eyes to be staring up.

I don't think I'd donate to medical schools - science research yes, but medical schools? I've spent too long around medical students, I'd like some modicum of respect for the dead, thanks. I probably shouldn't care, but the way some medical students treat and react to the cadavers they work on disgusts me, I have to say.
When I went to go get my California ID card, I didn't check the box asking if I wanted to be an organ donor.
It's not that I want to be selfish and go "Fuck you, people who are compatible with me in regards to organ donation! I'm keeping them and letting them rot!"
