Are we due for the Ice Warriors?

They've been sort of teased twice in mars-related stories:

1-In Christmas invasion, it's assumed by someone (Harriet Jones?) that the Sycorax are from Mars. The UNIT corporal responds: "Martians look totally different".

2-Water of Mars also mentions the Ice Warriors-by name this time-and the Doctor even speaks in their tongue to attempt to communicate with the water zombie.


3-Strangely though, The ice warriors don't appear at all in either the monster montage in Eleventh Hour and I don't believe they're mentioned by name in Pandorica opens either (As martians or Ice Warriors).

Granted, while "martians" are kind of a sci-fi cliche, I thought the Ice Warriors are among the better representations. They're kind of like the 24th century Klingons a bit, at least in the Peladon serials-A warrior race that eventually makes peace with earth, but with still a few stragglers here and there.

In the TV series, it's been nearly four decades since they last made their appearence, although a Sixth Doctor story (Mission to Magnus, which also would've brought back Sil in place of Mindwarp) was planned but junked when the original season 23 didn't go into production. There was also going to be a Seventh Doctor serial in season 27 but that also was never done. Most recently there were rumors they would appear in the season 3 opener, but we got the Judoon instead.

I think they come off well, visually, although they could use an update (Hopefully one that keeps them suitably alien-not something like the recent Silurians).

They did show a Sea Devil in the Eleventh Hour montage yet we haven't seen one for real yet.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ice Warriors or Sea Devils.

Whether or not they actually should I'd be surprised if they didn't revisit them soon.

To be honest, I think not: we'll just get occasional asides to acknowledge their role in Who's past.

Don't get me wrong: The Ice Warriors are probably my favourites of the original series 'Big Four' monsters, and Izlyr (in the Curse of Peladon) is one of my favourite characters full-stop - I wish that they'd turned him into a recurring character, a Federation-era Brigadier (IYSWIM).

But coming at them now, what is there that makes them stand out as a USP?
They come from Mars (requires lots of explanation to make this work now).
They can be frozen and revived. (OK, promising)
They are honourable but ruthless warriors ("Oh, a bit like the Klingons," says anyone under 30).
Though initially hostile, they later become Humanity/the Doctor's uneasy allies ("Oh, just like the Klingons!" Doesn't matter that Curse did it first, it'd seem like a rip-off).

And the Cybermen are just like the Borg? That doesn't stop the new series using them. And (on admittedly a more obscure note) what are the Sontarans if not Jem'Hardar? (or vice versa)

I'd like to see the Ice Warriors back.

But I'd also like to see the new series develop a new reccuring foe, which is easier said than done, I guess there are the Weeping Angels but Moffat really had to screw around with their mythology to turn them into a recurring foe, and frankly I kinda hope we don't see them again.

Zygons and Ice Warriors are the two classic Who aliens i'd like to see brought back. i think both could be tweaked just a bit to fit in nicely, appeal to a new audience and not offend old fans.

Well considering they've both been name-dropped recently, absolutely.

Another somewhat recurring alien species created in the new series would be the Judoon. Mind you, they're not really villains, and aside from Smith and Jones most of their Doctor Who appearances have been minor cameos.

Not really. As you say they can be frozen and revived. Might have to do a Tomb of the Cybermen style story. The last of their kind found deep under the surface of Mars.

Or if you want to know why their civilisation is suddenly absent from Mars just say simply "oh they left."
