Are the Romulans trying to weaponize Borg tech?

The Overlord

I already mentioned this on other threads, but it can work as its own thread.

Do think the Romulans are trying to weaponize Borg tech to rebuild their Empire? We see a Borg cube but has blue lights instead of green and the inside of the cube seems to be run like a prison camp by the Romulans, who seem to have prisoners they are experimenting on. Also this girl Picard is protecting may be a threat to their plans somehow.

The borg don't build planets.

That might be a choice, rather than a limitation.

What romulans want is time travel to reverse everything, or the ability to copy the personalities of everyone on Romulus before it was destroyed.

Its a star empire. They have hundreds of worlds and trillions of citizens. Losing the home world is a black eye, but they will recover.

The real estate is not as important as the 20 billion experts,

If they were trying to weaponize Borg Tech, it would make sense. It's actually something they should've done over 30 years ago, after the attack on System J-25 in "The Neutral Zone". Like the Romulan Commander told Picard, "When we saw the level of destruction, we knew it couldn't have been you." As soon as they would've pieced together it was the Borg, they should've started thinking, "How can we get technology such as this to deter any of our adversaries?"

Which in turn makes Starfleet ordering Picard to patrol the Neutral Zone in First Contact "in case the Romulans decide to take advantage of the situation" retroactively make a little bit more sense. It works for a secondary reason, even if the primary reason was still to keep Picard sitting on the bench.

The Queen was waiting for Picard. She was choosing to slowly lose The Battle of Earth, until her husband was present to chase her.

What would have happened if Picard had followed orders, is that after the Queen couldn't fake being a sissy cuck any more, she would have gone to the Neutral Zone to get her man.

It's really just an old fashioned love story.

I wonder if the Romulans found Hugh's disabled cube. Maybe the ship in Descent wasn't a modified cube, or other Borg design, but rather something Lore hijacked for the Borg.

Well, the Borg started out as a mutual threat to the Romulans and the Federation, and I've warmed up to the idea that the Romulans might have used some banned weapons technology to destroy/disable a Borg cube early on, which is why the Borg never invaded Romulan space again. So maybe they'd had the cube for awhile, and now it's their fallback plan in some manner.

I don't think it's weapons tech that they're after, though. Maybe temporal tech, maybe tech that lets them control former drones to rebuild the empire, being able to have a slave force of billions at the flip of a switch.

I trust the blue is just Romulan forcefields keeping the obviously well-ventilated Cube airtight and intact. Do I see a bit of DSC-style patterning to the fields, too?

That there might be accidental assimilations going on is sinister enough. But clearly the Romulans experiment on actual Drones in one scene; their goals might be from the "human angle", then, having to do with the assimilation process itself. But declaring (even humorously/sadistically) that there have been no assimilations recently would then make little sense...

The Countdown comic (and Star Trek Online) have post-Hobus Romulan tech upgraded by bootleg Borg technology. Hence the Narada's awesome but crazy look. It began as a boxy mining ship and the spikes of death were all a result of a trip to a secret space station called The Forge. I can see them adapting elements of that (they are using the Countdown Starfleet uniforms, after all)

bootleg Borg technology.

Bootleg Borg Tech. The hottest item on the late-24th/early-25th Century Market.

Chakotay: You might want to look at this Engineering report. It'll take at least two weeks to remove the Borg technology from our systems. B'Elanna did note that the power couplings on deck eight work better with the Borg improvements.

Janeway: Leave them.

...It's a great thing Spock created a timehole so that Nero could take the time to visit that place during his crazed chase after Spock!

Adapting, perhaps. Adopting, less probably.

But what "spikes of death"? Those dangling things never killed anybody. Or assimilated, or self-repaired, or did other Borgish things. OTOH, I could see them wrapping possessively around asteroids the ship wants to mine. Wholly without Borg involvement.

Perhaps the Forge is the repurposed Borg cube in the trailer.

PS: If they speak French in addition to English and Romulan, it would be La Forge. Another cameo!

He's referring to the Countdown comics. The spikes do indeed get used to painfully attack people in those.
