Are the maquis ships the same thing as the federation fighters we see in season 6?
they look very similiar (although it looks like the fighters are smaller)

i always assumed maquis ships were stolen from the federation, its kind of wierd, the maquis having a specific class of ship, you'd think they'd have tons of various ships aquired through different means

anyway the ships bear resemblence (to me)

i get the impression the maquis ship is a little smaller than the defiant, but similiar

The crew recognized a particular configuration as a "Maquis" ship, a Maquis fighter. So there were at least one configuration unique to them. Funny that a settler people could find the means to build space worthy fighters. But then, it's Star Trek. Anything is possible.

Wait for it. . . . . . .

The Maquis fighters seen in the two part episode The Maquis were later seen as the Federation Fighters in the Dominion War.

The Maquis raiders could have been surplus federation ships acquired from a storage facility, like Qualor II as mentioned in TNG’s “Unification”. Or the Maquis ships could have been civilian versions of the ship that were modified to carry weapons. Dialog in DS9 “Maquis” mentioned these ships were courier vessels. So, these small, nimble-like ships may have been modified to be used as fighters. Starfleet probably had the same line-of-thought when war with the Dominion broke out.

No doubt our heroes would have learned to recognize certain modifications of pre-existing designs as "Maquis ships". They could even recognize certain tactics and maneuvering styles that would allow them to indentify a random ship as a "Maquis ship". There doesn't seem to be any clear indication that any of the ships seen in Maquis hands (there were at least half a dozen distinct designs there) would have been built by the colonists from keel up, really.

In "The Maquis", interrogation of the Vulcan gunrunner allowed our heroes to establish that at that time, the Maquis only had two ships capable of carrying the heavy weapons purchased. We then saw that these were of the type that would later be used as a Starfleet fighter. The other, offscreen Maquis type that had earlier in the episode been identified as some sort of a modified courier need not have been either of these two, really. Nor would the Peregrine class courier of "Heart of Stone" fame necessarily be of this fighter type. But most of the Maquis ships after the introductory episode were relatively heavily armed, capable of putting up at least as much resistance as the two fighters in "The Maquis" did...

The Maquis were shown using the same design as the Federation fighter (in "Preemptive Strike" and "The Maquis"), so the answer is yes.

If you meant to refer to Chakotay's ship type, that's a visibly different design of ship from the Federation fighter and is bigger, but obviously is also used by the Maquis.
