Yes, but the dolphin tank is the entire environment required for a dolphin (well, I doubt if it actually is healthy for a dolphin to spend his/her entire life in a tank). A horse may need less room in the stable, but how much room (and excercise) does it need to stay healthy? Does it need to gallop at high speed every now and then, for example, and could the holodeck accomodate that ? (I mean it is suited for people but is it also suited for much larger and faster animals?)

This is Boerboel. In keeping with Sisko's heritage the Boerboel is a breed from Africa. They're popular as guard dogs for live stock because they can drive off lions.

Okay I was thinking one of those creatures from the Enterprise that sort of looked like s lizard. They had them also I think in the episode The Most Toys from TNG.
However, now I'm leaning towards a Fluffers cat from one of the posts above.

Sisko didn't have too much time on his hands so he wouldn't be suited for a dog, but if he had one it would be... a beagle. Beagles are lovely dogs and every CO should have one.

Sisko wasn't a "pet" kind of guy, so I wouldn't have seen him bothering with one. I know, Picard had a fish (you could spin it either way), Janeway had Harry Kim, and Archer had Porthos... but different captains, different lifestyles.
