Okay, after two contests with relatively light rules it's time to get serious.
To explain my thinking, I'll tell you about one of my favorite war movies, "Action In The North Atlantic." The premise is that a WWII Liberty Ship is separated from its convoy and escorts and hunted by Nazi U-boats all the way to its destination. It survives, and when it pulls into port one admiral comments on the damage it took and says the fact that it arrived is a miracle, and the admiral he's talking to says, "That's no miracle. That's American Seamanship!"
That kind of triumphalism is what I want to see in your stories. so your mission is to take your favorite canon or fanon hero ship, absolutely beat the snot out of it in some way, and then have it sail into port, beaten but unbowed, to the amazement of the those who witness its homecoming. Or, if you'd rather a more personal story, pick a character and have them come back from devastating personal tragedy or lloss, and have his or her companions see how well they've recovered upon their return to duty.
Here are the rules.
1. Now that we have an official topic, we're going back to the rule that the story must be written specifically for this month's contest. Also, the story must be complete at the time of posting.
2. As usual, post a story thread and post a link to that thread in this one.
3. Your word range is between 1000-5000 words.
4. The deadline for posting is May 27, 2019, with the remainder of May set aside for voting.
I know you're just aching to get on with your mission, so I'll leave you to it.
Good Luck!
