Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is of NGC 4921, with a caption playfully referred to as "The Anemic Galaxy". It's a fascinating picture as always, giving you a look at yet another intriguing astronomical entity. There sits this ghostly looking face on galaxy, surrounded by numerous stars. However... click on that image, then click on the image behind it. The resulting files is good size, at over 4mb. For a reason. So very many of what looked like "stars" in the original, smaller image in the first link end up resolving to galaxies. It's a sort of snap-shot companion to the HUDF (Hubble ultra-Deep Field).
"In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And, in all the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that – and perhaps more – only one of each of us. . . ."
