Astronomy Picture of the Day for 2008-09-17

At first glance it looks like a picture of what has almost become common to observe these days:-the collision of two galaxies. But closer examination that not only are galaxies colliding but an entire cluster seems to be in collision. The sheer size and scope of such an event is to say the least, staggering. Trying to conceive such an event is impossible for me, not only because of the physical dimension but also the time over which it's occurring.

Isn't that the photo we had in all those other threads about being able to see dark matter for the first time?
 
Wow, I completely missed it earlier when it appeared on the BBC site. It is the same picture. The nice thing here is the larger photo allows you to see the shapes of several of the galaxies pictured.
