Anyone worked in Antarctica?

I've been wanting to do so, and today was lucky enough to receive an e-mail noting that I've passed the first phase and am under consideration to go as an Admin Assistant. I've read from others that I can now look forward to a barrage of interviews, medical exams and red tape and the possibility of getting or not getting the position.

Anyway, has anyone here ever worked in Antarctica or just traveled down there? I think I remember someone here talking about being stationed at McMurdo at one point....

Not directly, but I have an Aunt and Uncle who are wildlife photographers. They've been going on antartic cruises geared towards professional photographers.

I've always wanted to get down there but with three young kids I doubt that'll happen soon.

My company makes documentaries and frequently visit Antarctica. Must try and get on the next film shoot.

I want to travel to South Georgia as well at some stage.

I saw a TV show about a group of scientists that went to the North Pole to try and detect something called 'magnetic monopoles'. Unfortuantely due to personal differences they were unable to complete the experiment successfully and when they returned to America with large beards one of them ran off to his mother in Texas.

I hope this helps.

I was there twice on a Coast Guard icebreaker -- each time for about 8-9 weeks.

It's a staggeringly beautiful place that really makes you feel about 2 inches tall compared to Momma Nature. I totally wish I could go back!!

Cheers,

I've never *worked* in Antarctica, but I did see the episode of Planet Earth that was about the *penguins* in Antarctica.

You need to watch the documentary film "Encounters At The End Of The World" by Werner Herzog. A really great film that portrays the lives of those that work there.

Nope. Canada has no official presence in Antarctica, so there aren't a lot of opportunities for us.

That said, I would love to go to the North someday.

I don't know about the Antartica, butI heard that some scientists stationed in the Artic were killed by cyborgs from the future? I think the government tried to cover it up.

Strange, I heard about how the air force found this giant shaft in the ice of Antarctica that lead down to some kind of station that was millions of years old.

If you do go, and you see a dog being chased by a couple of lunatic Norwegians in a helicopter, shoot the dog and not the Norwegians.
