Anyone Use BBC iPlayer...

DangerMouse

If so, do you know why this is happening...

When I try and watch something on BBC iPlayer, the picture goes really slowly while the sound is at the right speed.

I've tried 'use lower bandwidth' and it just makes the problem worse.

Any ideas?

:techman:

Sometimes I find the picture chops dangerously after a while. I've noticed that my laptop has Realtek sound built in, and one of the processes, audiodg.exe uses a lot of processing power specifically during this time - thus causing the choppy picture as the processor cannot handle the extra needless processing workload to do everything.

I read (and have tried and verified) that a workaround for Vista involves going into the Playback Devices properties, and under Enhancements, checking the box marked "Disable all sound effects" box, then clicking OK or Close or whatever to apply those changes. It should work.

^ I have very limited computer knowledge so don't really understand anything other than 'press this'

My image is just INCREDIBLY slow from the start - grrr

What are your system specs (processor, RAM, free HD space, download speed, OS version, etc.)? Knowing what you're working with might give us an idea of how to go about fixing it.

you could try other download options and get the copy for portable devices. its wmv format so should still play.

The trouble is I don't really understand any of this stuff.

I think iPlayer is clearly for computer experts and not an every day user like me :(

Does any of this information help...

Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz
1.99GHz, 704 of RAM
My internet connection is NETGEAR wireless
I have Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX and Plugin
Windows Internet Explorer 8

Something else that might work is to try and deactivate as many of the unnecessary applications running in the background as you safely can (i.e. don't touch the antivirus/firewall). They can be found on the System Tray (bottom right of the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, where your clock and volume control are) and clicking (or right-clicking) on the relevant icons there, or by going into Task Manager (access using CTRL-ALT-Del).

This happens to me when my lap top tries to do something else like my anti virus might update its self.
Could your pc be running a program while you try to watch your shows?

It's not that bad, the volume goes up to 11!

I've had problems with it too, I find it plays better streaming than when I download programmes, which I found a bit odd.

Suggestions? Are you leaving other tabs open when watching a programme? Or to expand on what Zion Ravescene said;

Try hitting the CTRL, ALT and DELETE keys at the same time. It won't restart your PC like it did in days gone by, instead you'll be presented with a screen that calls itself the Windows Task Manager.

Click on the "Processes" tab on this screen, you'll be shown all the programmes, little and large, that your PC is running and how much memory they're using.

Background Windows processes on my own tend to use a few thousand k of memory, programmes I've installed to run in the background like anti-virus suites use a few tens of thousands of k of memory and something big like Firefox can use up to a hundred and fifty thousand.

If anything on the list you don't recognise is using a lot of memory (maybe as much as Firefox), you can shut it down or Google the name of the process to see if its harmful and if it can be removed.

A piece of malware got on my PC a while back and slowed it down so badly it couldn't manage to run a DVD without it skipping and jerking all over the place. I did the above, found something I didn't recognise and got rid of it, DVDs played just fine afterwards.

Of course, there's no substitute for a fast machine and fast net connection :)

It can be a bit iffy for me sometimes. I find sometimes pausing it for a few minutes and going back to it helps.
