Anyone still play BOTF?

I think the first was so much better. 2 was terrible out of the box with the planet rush, and even when the patches started to clear things up, I found it a lot more tedious than the previous one (particularly with an utterly boring campaign tacked on).

I still play BotF frequently, usually getting in a couple games in between seasons of my computer baseball league.

I pick a large, irregular galaxy to maximize the number of minor races, and I use the hard setting with random events on. Each empire will start at tech level 1 so they have to work hard to expand.

Typically I play as the Federation. Doing research and making allies -- that's my style. If I want a challenge, I'll play as the Romulans so I have to be more warlike. Either way, I eventually liberate, or obliterate, the Klingon or Cardassian systems.

I do use the map cheat at the start of the game, though. If I'm the UFP, Vulcan has to be nearby or I try another map. Once I see Vulcan, I switch to a pristine version of the map that I saved, and go from there.
A Federation without Vulcan is no fun for me.

Add me to the list of people who would love to see a Birth of the Federation 2. I envision the Dominion as a sixth player empire, of course, and minor aliens from all 5 series would appear, like the Gorns, First Federation, and Vidiians.

A game called Star Trek: Supremacy currently in development is effectively a remake. So I believe.

Everyone, a little tip:
BOTF got better and more difficult to beat as of recently.
The most recent release of Ultimate Dominion Mod III (final release to my knowledge) has expanded the galaxy to a much larger size when set on 'huge'.
Minor races limitations still exist (only 29 at maximum are able to be in the game for the most part).

But, other powers can steal your minors from you despite the friendship treaties for example, and whatnot.

I think that BOTF can be played online, but you need specific server access ... not entirely sure really as I haven't looked into that aspect of the game too much (or had the opportunity) to play around.

Also, the new multi mod allows you to install multiple mods into the game and run them separately from each other ... so it's a good thing as you don't have to clean install the game and install one mod at a time.

The 3d acceleration aspect is still lacking though.
It's best to continue running in SOFTWARE mode as newer cards can easily crash the game if the 3d is set to 3Dfx or DIRECT3D (even with Hades 2.2 patch).
I guess some bugs still have to be worked out for the most part.

It remains a great game.

Supremacy ... still in pre-beta I think, but you can have a good basic experience actually.
Regular updates exist, but no 3d engine for fighting with other races.

Hey, is somebody interested in playing the mod online?

I'd be interested.
But the problem is that I never really figured out how to set up online play properly.
It's odd.

It's really easy, just download the gameranger client and open the ports for botf on your router.

The ports for botf are 47624 (TCP) and 2300-2400 (TCP+UDP).

i really liked Birth of the Federation, however my new laptop doesn't like it and won't play it anymore lol

cheers Sisko, I will try, but it might be that its no longer compatible with my computer as the OS is now vista and it might not like vista

Vista isn't the problem. The game runs under Vista exactly as it did with XP. Even Windows 7 isn't a problem for the game.

I used to play on that all the time...
but I never bothered with negotiating with the "minor races". I just sent in an armada of troop transports and conquered their worlds.
