Anyone seen Max Payne yet???

I just saw it. Its not horrible. Nothing spectacular though. Better than Appalosa which had better reviews from critics. That was a truely horrible film and I usually love most westerns.

I saw it. It was very "meh". Slow to start, predictable characters, predictable plot, okay action sequences.

There was nothing "bad" about it per se, but nothing amazing either. Very average, very run of the mill movie.

I saw it too...

I expected something a lot more fast paced...

Honestly, literally everything cool is in the trailer.

The best thing about it was how hot that chick from Quantum of Solace is in it.

I haven't seen Appaloosa yet, but reviews have been mixed, though leaning favorable rather than not. Metacritic's average is at 63, Rotten Tomatoes at 75.

Not interested in going to Max Payne theatrically, based on what I've read and heard from a few friends who have seen it. And I was all excited to see the actor who plays Marlo Stanfield on The Wire in a new role, too. Oh well, that's why they invented DVD.

I refuse to see any more movies where the characters jump through the air while firing two pistols. Ugh. Oh yeah, and they're wearing trench coats.

Of all the reasons not to see this, the fact that one of the signature game moves shows up in the film must be one of the strangest....

I saw it. It wasn't as bad as I'd feared. It wasn't as good I'd hoped.

I saw Quarantine the same day, and liked that better. In fact, I think it actually reduced my enjoyment of Max Payne.

Quarantine was very minimalistic and cinema-verité in style. Max Payne, by contrast, seemed very stylized and artificial and stagy. It looked fake. The fact that I could tell it was Toronto, not New York, didn't help.

To make matters worse, it just wasn't very exciting. All the action was packed into the last fifteen minutes. The rest of it was fairly dull. There was more gunfire during the closing credits than there was in the rest of the movie.

Which made me wonder: what was the point? I mean, the point of making a movie out of Max Payne? The game itself had an interesting story, in between the frequent gunfights. The movie departed significantly from the story, and eliminated most of the gunfighting. So why bother?

I give it two stars out of four. It wasn't terrible, and the ending was significantly better than either the beginning or the middle. But it was pretty mediocre, overall.

Sigh... I saw Quarantine last week and thought it sucked balls.
Oh well Just might have to wait for FPV.

 Your standards must be quite a bit higher than mine.

Ah, glad to hear Quarantine was good. It looked potentially interesting from the trailers, but I was kind of burned-out on bad zombie or pseudo-zombie movies of late. But if they do it in the way you describe it sounds promising. I'll check it out.

That about matches my impression of the movie as well. I gave it a "B-."

I wasn't expecting great quality from a video game film of course, but at least I thought it would be satisfying in terms of having plenty of action. Everything is weighted towards the end, and while it makes up in sheer intensity for the lack of action in the first 3/4ths of the film, it couldn't overcome how bored I was with the majority of the movie.

There's nothing that really stands out as being terrible about the film. The acting was satisfactory, the filmmaking was adequate; it was just kind of bland and uninteresting. I already knew the backstory of the drug and the company, so the mystery didn't really hold any interest for me, but perhaps someone unfamiliar with the storyline of the game might enjoy it more.

I think being based on the game might actually end up being detrimental to the film (in terms of fan reaction rather than box office, which should benefit from the name recognition, at least). I went in there expecting non-stop gun fights and got sort of a subdued crime thriller instead.

You're right that there wasn't really any need to base this on the game at all from a storytelling standpoint, since it could have been a fairly commonplace revenge film - apart from the hallucinations and Norse mythology references.

It's not a bad movie, but I think for most people it's probably a wait for DVD type film.

I saw it, thought it was really quite bad.

It has a couple of interesting moments and it looks great, but it's pretty bad. My main problem was that I thought it was just so damn boring, I was hoping for something dumb and fun in the vein of 300, but the plot and editing conspired to make it a mess, there was some really bad acting by almost everyone and the sound editing was ridiculously obnoxious... really. It felt like a bunch of disparate and almost unrelated scenes stitched together to make a movie.

That said, it looked a lot like the videogame.

I saw it last night with a friend and it was all right. I agree that the pacing of the movie was poor...and I agree as well that it was filmed too much in the style of Sin City and 300. I would give it about a 3/5.

Loved it, but then I like cop drama/revenge stories. I was thouroughly entertained throughout, and I thought the film possessed style and grit, as well as an interesting story and cool anti-hero.

I don't know anything about the game, so my gripe still stands. At least it's not a woman fighting zombies/vampires.

I just saw it with a bunch of friends, and we all basically said the exact same thing. It made little sense, the writing and characters were totally clichéd, the action sequences were dull, the dialogue was cheesy, and the acting was shit.

I give it 1.5/10, and that's only because of a long-standing crush on Mila Kunis...even though her character was totally pointless.

The hell?

It was boring. What can I say. Ed Harris' character was a retard. He still stayed with the same woman after she cheated. How many times?? There was barely any action and unlike Unforgiven, this western had just bad drama. Unforgiven also didnt have much action but it had a great story. Appallosa was just plain disappointing.

I expected more. I agree all the action is in the promos. It moved slow, but it wasn't horrible. Not a bad way to waste a few hours.
