Recently, I've been feeling inspired to create a renaissance-style lute. I'm a far cry from a luthier, but I'm pretty sure that if I try hard enough I can at least make something that sounds pretty, and by Golly that's good enough for me.
I've been digging about the Interwebz and so far I've found pictures of lutes in various stages of construction, lute-making kits for nearly $600, and vague descriptions of the steps involved, but nowhere have I found exact measurements, materials, etc.
Does anybody here know the approximate measurements of a lute? What I need is the length, width, and thickness of the neck, body, and head, and maybe some advice on how to cut out the rosette over the sound hole, as shown here:
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
