Anyone know how to get Trek Books in New Zealand?

Without resorting to ordering from the USA at extortionate prices? Most shops only have 1 or 2 star trek books avaliable.

As I said in a related question earlier, any large bookshop that has good customer service and a computer ordering system can bring in ST books for you - just give them the ISBN.

However, keep in mind that comic specialists using the Diamond Orderpak will be paying air freight charges for "new release" titles, whereas a bookshop ordering through Simon & Schuster's distributor will have to wait the three months for the "new release" books to arrive by sea freight.

so if i go to a usual book shop and want say Destiny book 1 will that take 3 months?

"Destiny, Book 1: Gods of Night" (ISBN 978-1-4165-5171-3) was an October release for USA, so that means it's a November/December release in UK and a December/January release in Australasia. I assume Australia's Simon & Schuster looks after New Zealand, too, so that sea freighted book should now be in stock in the local S&S warehouse, since we are now in January. In fact, your large book shops may have it on their shelves, or other NZ fans have beat you to it. (There are other ST fans in NZ. I've met them! Most of them seem to work for WETA these days; I see their names in the credits of movies!)

If you order the next two in the series, and there is no local stock already on order, then yes, you may be up for a long wait.

Or, had you ordered Book 1 through a comic book specialist, you'd have had it in the last week of September, although you would have to be prepared to pay a much higher price for the air freight.

Chain bookstores often have inventories that can be cross-checked between stores. Some books might only have to travel by land (from one store in the chain to another store in the chain) rather than sea or air.

Sometimes I order off Amazon, but boy do you end up paying for it, Ill have to hit up my local book store this time

Very true, but Australasia only has two bulk sources of Pocket Books' ST titles: Simon & Schuster Australia (sea from US) and Diamond Distribution (air from US to comic specialists). If the OP wants the cheapest freight charges possible, then they must be prepared to wait for the bulk sea shipment - and that's three months (to Sydney) after the book has arrived in US shops.

I don't care about paying a bit more, I would like say a 2 week wait tops for my books, otherwise i may as well use amazon

How come the books are more expensive on amazon?
I, too, order Trek books via amazon.de (because I'd have to have them ordered in any book shop, anyway) and the prices are pretty reasonable.

I don't find Amazon prices "more expensive" at all, often cheaper than "recommended retail price", but sometimes people complain about international postage charges. There are still often three levels of postage available, but the cheapest takes much longer to arrive, of course.

But, worldwide, how post office charges are applied to packages of various sizes have changed in recent years. It used to be that the mass of a package, and the speed of delivery, indicated cost. Now it's often physical dimensions. I went to post some thick fanzines a few years ago: three thick, bound volumes to the one international address - and it was much cheaper to put each book into a separate padded envelope than all three in one parcel. Bizarre, and not terribly eco-friendly.

I object to paying 25 dollars U.S for shipping that can take "up to three months" I live in new zealand, not rigel 10

But how do you choose postage? it just adds it automatically and its always loads???

even with normal shipping, it'll cost almost US$10 to ship a paperback to Australia. these days I rather wait for 2 months to get a Trek book, paying Aust$15 a book, instead of Aust$25 for a book from Amazon. In that sense getting the air fright copy from comic shops is actually cheaper, about AU$17 a book.

I actually find that it is often cheaper to buy off Amazon than it is to buy from my local bookshops. Less so now than it was a few months ago, but I can still often find a bargain on Amazon especially as GST isn't added to the books I get from Amazon.

I think I usually pay about $AUD10.00 postage per book depending on the exchange rate.

I usually get my order within about three weeks.

Ok, that explains it. Amazon.de offers English language books (among them all the Trek books) but doesn't charge shipping. Shipping for books is always free. So, I only pay the retail price (sometimes even less than the recommended retail price on the back of the books). They usually ship them out shortly after they're published in the US.

Sorry to Necro this, but I have a question regarding Amazon, why is it that sometimes it displays the total price of your order in NZD and sometimes its in USD, this makes things very confusing!

I believe the reason for that would be that you need to actually be signed into your account.
