Anyone Here Work In A Bank?

Since getting laid off last winter and looking for a job I've been applying to a number of bank teller jobs but no joy. Now I think I have a chance! I've been volunteering at the library and one of the women who works there told me of an opening at the credit union across the street where she just retired from and I got to put her name on my application as a reccomendation.

Anyway for those of you who work in a bank (if you're out there), I was wondering if it's an enjoyable experience for you or not. And what would the pay be for a starting part-timer?

I think I would enjoy working in a bank. My sister used to be a teller and she says it's pretty easy going and you just strictly follow rules without exception. This is good for me because professionally I'm a total stickler for the rules and I don't like making exceptions for people or cutting them breaks and whatnot. Also my favorite part of my last job (assistant manager at a video store) was doing the paper work at the end of night and counting the drawers and whatnot.

I haven't personally. But my best friend does. He actually likes it a lot. The amazing thing is, given his personality, one would think he wouldn't fit in and would hate it.

But he says it's nice because it doesn't have the add costumer relations "pressure" that comes with sales. People are usually more friendly. (After all, you're giving THEM money.) And, as long as you're quick and accurate with a number pad, it's a breeze.

Well I'm good at accounting paperwork but I can't add 2 and 2 in my head to save my life :D

Hmm... maybe don't mention that at the interview :p

Actually I think bank rules would require you to do everything on a calculator with an audit roll anyway.

Bank are infamous for poor salaries. They also require you to dress up, sometimes at your expense. Otherwise they aren't bad jobs. You get to work in a comfortable working environment,

^Agreed. I work at a bank. In the Twin Cities, the salaries aren't the best, maybe mid-20's, if you're lucky. We've got HQs for U.S. Bank and TCF Bank here, too. There's a lot of turnover with teller jobs...don't know if it's the pressure or just people moving up in the company.

Hope you get the job you want. :bolian:

I work at a bank, but doubt my experiences are applicable, unfortunately. I work in the Trust Operations Department as a Business Analyst, which essentially means if I'm not putting reports together I'm doing Application Support for people, or being a liaison between us and our application vendors.
I can honestly say that, in my position, how much I enjoy what I do is directly impacted by who I'm interacting with. 75% of my co-workers are pretty relaxed, 25% are uptight "I need this right now!" types who show no appreciation for the fact that I can't create a report via telepathy.
Given our current economy, I'm happy to say that during my last performance review in March I got a raise. I've been with the bank about 2.5 years now, and granted I've held three different positions in that time, my income's increased more than 15%.
I'm in VT, and I would _guess_ the starting rate for someone in an entry-level part-time position (i.e. teller) would be around $10/hour, but that's a completely unqualified estimate. We do have excellent benefits as well, though I'm not sure how those would apply to part-time employment.
Yes, particularly if you're working on the front lines, do not make exceptions. At least, not if you value your job...and possibly your legal status.

It says it's up to 26 hrs/wk with holiday-sick-BDay-vacay pay, long term disability insurance, paid training, and 401(k). My last job maxed out at $9/hr so I'm used to making shit for pay :p But hopefully this will be a lil' more!

I haven't worked in a bank myself, but I've got a few friends who work as tellers. They all enjoy their jobs. The work is pretty straightforward, the hours are great (bankers hours always leave you free on weekends), and their co-workers are pretty friendly.

If you enjoy paperwork and sticking to the rules, a job at a bank is probably right up your alley. You should go for it.

A long, long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away) I briefly went out with a bank cashier. She didn't mind the work & liked her colleagues, but said it could get repetitive and there were some pretty odd customers at times.

The only other bankers I know fall into the i-banking variety, so their experiences won't be relevant (just to say, most of them hate it and actively hoard their generous bonuses, to prepare for a very early retirement - either voluntary or involuntary).
