Anyone here who likes Neelix?

he can be considered a combination of data, work, and troi. I liked him. torres, the doctor, and neelix.

Neelix will forever be responsible for LEOLA ROOT in my Star Trek vocabulary. Every time I see ginger, I reminds me of that alien vegetable. He was a necessary character for the crews' morale and he was great with the Naomi and be an Ambassador for Voyager. He's the character I miss from that show.
Wow!

I'm amazed that I've managed to create a thread which is still going a long time after I've created it.

As for Leola Root, in 2014 I found evidence that the Earth was in contact with the Delta Quadrant before 2371:

I kind of like Neelix. It's mainly down to Ethan Phillips, who managed to make such a horrendously, terminally botched attempt at a sympathetic character...sympathetic.

ethan Phillips has always been a very good actor, he has done great work making charecters we love.
The reason most people don't like neelix is that we are introduced to his character, in a time when he was dealing and wheeling with the voyager crew like he was tutored by Quark in terms of trading and making business deals.
He did everything he could to get voyager to help him save his girl kes, and then when they did he spent to many seasons trying to make sure kes did not get stolen from him by the pretty fancy boys of star fleet.
It is easy to make the point that neelix and the doctor and kes are the only 3 dimensional charecters of the show.

Neelix was a very sweet and comical but often unappreciated character I loved how he was so good with Naomi and made every effort to keep up the crews spirits

I wish people would stop saying he was badly written. Don't bite the hand that feeds you, as they say.
Neelix wasn't badly written.
Instead, I find him being one of the best written characters of Star Trek.
I mean, here we have a guy who has seen his family being killed and got his whole life ruined. It affected him so deep that he became a drug addict for a while and was finally saved by his friend Wixiban.

After drifting in space for many years, he finally found a home on the spaceship Voyager.

No doubt that the tragic and traumatic events in the past had made him sort of a psychic wreck in some aspects. But who can blame him? Anyone with such experiences would be affected in one way or another and that's what I like with the character. He was no super-hero who just did shook it off and continued as if nothing had happened.

And the best thing with Neelix was that he tried to turn everything into something positive. He wanted to see happy people around him because it made him happy. Instead of becoming a bitter recluse, he actually tried to help and cheer up people around him and that makes him likeable.

OK, he did go over the top on some occasions but at least he tried to do his best.

I love Neelix! He's easily my favorite Voyager character, and one of my top ten in all of Star Trek. He's been through some serious stuff, but he still tries to do the best he can. The episode where he loses his faith completely and almost commits suicide was particularly moving, but he's also got great comedic scenes. (The alien angel hair pasta bit cracks me up every time.) His jealousy over Kes and his insecurity about his usefulness in the earlier episodes was pretty ugly, but it makes for a more flawed, rounded character than is usual for Trek. It's a realistic character trait for someone who had to fight and scramble for any kind of consistent comfort or security before joining a starship crew. And we do see him grow and change out of that kind of attitude. Neelix is great--I'd want him on my crew for sure.

I agree with all of that, just one factual error- he doesn't commit suicide, he just becomes suicidal.

I did say "almost commits suicide", which I believe is accurate--I think one of the other characters either had to talk him down or physically prevent him from doing so.

I agree in almost everything what you have written. But I must admit that I really disliked the episode "Mortal Coil". It was an episode where Braga tried to push his atheist beliefs down our throats and poor Neelix became the victim. It was downright cruel to make him lose his faith of seeing his family again in the afterlife.

Here's my issue with that episode - his body didn't go to the alleged afterworld. So, his brain didn't either. Why would it hold a memory of it?

Why would he be so certain it didn't exist?

What makes him think he would be able to straddle the physical universe and the metaphysical world? They are antithetical things - even in concept alone. Like trying to see if the refrigerator light turns off when you close the door. By definition, you can't.

Or know if the cat is alive or dead. The point is, you don't. Knowing negates the question.

Neelix wasn't my favorite character in the series, but I never had a problem with him.

He was a fairly obnoxious character when first introduced, kind of reminded me of George Costanza. But he grew on me in later seasons, especially after he split up with Kes, which was good for both of them. He was good with Naomi and the Borg kids.
